This is another way to leave a city: Vincent Trocheck making a large donation to UNC Children's hospital on way out of Raleigh.
That would have been his perfect exit and cemented his legacy in Calgary even if he decided to move on. His wife, a pediatric nurse and him decide to give back the community that gave so much to him as well, etc. He announces this after elimination and thanks everybody and then makes his plans clear. The city would forever love him.

That would have given Philly and his agent as well much more leeway to make cap space as well as provide Tre a return in terms of trading his rights to the preferred team.

Instead, he made the all too human mistake of being indecisive to the last minute and everybody is in a dumpster fire except for Jarmo.

To be fair, I was a dumpster fire of a human at 28 as well.

True, but if you are incapable of doing that, it's better to have your agent tell him than waste everybody's time negotiating a deal that you will never sign.

Columbus is the capital of Ohio. It's full of politicians. If he said anything substantive or convincing, he'd stick out like a sore thumb.

So the Flyers had a home-town star player lined up as a walk-on, and couldn't figure it out? Sheesh if I was a Flyers fan I'd be livid.

It was Johnny's first time as a UFA, and like any typical guy, he prematurely picked a team without thinking it through.

I’ve come to realise I was wrong. He seems to know who Gudbranson is.

Would make sense of the nonsense 11th hour decision that many suspect was made potentially days or weeks ago.

It's really just another thing to consider that has some logic behind it. Of course it would also make Gaudreau look pretty cowardly and selfish.

It was best for us not to go back. Jonny should get a publicist before speaking.

Does Lewis Gross suffer from anxiety too? If so, he's in the wrong line of work.

I've never been more convinced it was his wife driving this after watching this.

He seems to know next to little about the Blue Jackets, can only name 2 roster players and looks towards his wife constantly. He doesn't even know the name of the kid who gave up his # for him.

Again there's nothing wrong with that and deciding to leave, but to pull that card at the 11th hour is what rubs me the wrong way.

And there's inconsistencies in this vs the presser, he doesn't suggest Columbus was top just that they were on the list.

Well, couldn't Philly have dropped his AAV by adding an 8th year? And if he was traded there at the draft maybe they would have been more aggressive moving out salary. Probably would have been worth moving a third or fourth to get a hometown star.

I think Johnny realized he needed to not be in a Canadian hockey market, and Columbus was perfect for playing in a low profile place.

It’s consistent with all the known facts.

I’m in the exact same boat. I defended him pretty hard and now feel like an idiot for doing so.

He burned us. But whatever. I was a Flames fan long before Johnny Gaudreau and I’m still a Flames fan after him. We’ll recover, move on, and life will be good.

It does sound a lot like his wife is pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Also pretty hilarious the whole situation imo, clearly CBJ wasn't his first choice but he's trying to act as it was.

Well that radio guy is annoying. After all of this it would be great to get the full story. This signing still makes zero sense. I have a feeling there's more than one storyline here we won't know about for a while. Just a bizarre decision.

That was a train wreck of a press conference. From the first to the last question and everything inbetween.

He pretty much at one point said, anywhere but Calgary. So why all this 11th hour and hard decision BS?

None of this stacks up to even the most minimal scrutiny. Particularly illustrated when even the Columbus journalists kick off the presser with, “Columbus? WTF? Why here?”.

It all makes sense now! He's made a wild decision that makes no sense simply to drive up interest in his post-NHL 'Tell All' memoir book!

Sneaky Johnny....playing the Long-Con...
