I suspect it will be national news coverage on non game nights, pulling in the feed from Toronto, and then on game nights they broadcast the Flames.
Or as someone said, 960 keeps the games regardless of a new format they use.
960 could also still be sports, but just all from Toronto, except on game nights.
Crazy to think that this city cant support an all sports station....yet, here we are.

Boomer clearly saw the writing on the wall.

Well, the issue is more broadly that radio is suffering. Prior to covid less people were listening and listening less often. And now with less people commuting, for stations that depend on that "Drive" traffic which have always been the key hours for both stations and advertisers, I suspect it has taken another hit.

So radio is suffering overall.
But formats like sports and news then have higher costs b/c of way higher staff expenses. So they become even more vulnerable to these moves.

A music station can survive because, for the most part, a lot of them are staffing the morning drive, MAYBE (but not always) the afternoon drive and the rest can be voice tracked, where the DJ lays down 6 hours of programming ahead of time, in 2 hours. A computer decides what songs to play and when, and the DJ just drops in the usual banter in between. They record all that in advance.

If you walked in a radio station after 7 PM, you'd be stunned to see that there is no one there. It's just all being run by computers.

Covid changed the way they broadcasted games. Wills and Loubo sat in the downtown studios and called PBP from monitors. That could just as easily be done by two schleps in Toronto. No need to travel, of even be in the arena any more.

All I know is that it will be hard as an out of town Flames fan to get my Fkames talk now. Coming here is great, but I like the team interviews and all the hockey guests.

I hate the fact I'll have to listen to Vancouver radio for sports.

Dean AKA Cranky Molberg

Dean, a very below average beer hockey player, wanted to get into the big leagues. So his wife Trish and Deano packed up and moved to Red Deer. But here is where Dean caught the ear of Calgary radio execs at the Fan 960. Just like a young hockey player hoping to get called up to the big team that’s what happened, he was now doing sports for The Fan and started to really find his niche in the marketplace.
Great write up on Boomer from Brandon.

Yea, because why have the announcers in the arena feeding off of the live emotions of the crowd and game?? I swear to god with all this ‘advancement’ in technology humans are losing the plot along the way. I think Mike Judge was 400 years off on his prediction with Idiocracy, I give handjobs being offered as a menu item at Starbucks until 2100’s not the 2500’s.

Also to be fair Calgary has one big game in town and it's the Flames. The Stamps have a niche fan base and the CFL isn't big enough to have compelling news on a day to day basis. In the US it's a lot different in markets where a city would have a MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL etc team as they have big time sports going on every single month of the year and large fan bases following them. Ratings are going to be good all year round in cities like that. Toronto is probably the only Canadian city that has that kind of fan diversity.

Otherwise, I'm back to podcasts and audiobooks for commuting.

Haha I remember listening to this live at work. To be fair to Boomer, Pinder making this announcement on April Fool's Day of all days, was a hard day to drop shocking news and have it be believed. God I miss that show

They also own JACK FM, which could broadcast the games as well. Though that really limits broadcast area Im assuming.
Not uncommon for it to be like this. Winnipeg Jets broadcasts are like this. They broadcast on AM via a news station and on FM via a rock music station.

Don't know if it works that way. 960 has gone down hill recently, but it will be a shame if this city is left without a full-time sports radio station.
The Flames make the deal with radio, really has nothing to do with Sportsnet at all. It was just 960 made sense

They announced last week that games would be on the Fan960… so… what’s happening?

Listening to this again really makes me miss Boomer, Rhett and Pinder

LOL at Rhett's first comment, "Clean it up"

"you need 2 car seats!! 2 cribs!!" and Boomer laughing and wheezing from the laughing

Did this happen in other NHL markets? Certainly not with other pro sports teams that I follow.

Yes, radio crews especially. Rob Ray (Sabres) was one who said this, and how much he liked not having to travel with the team. I believe Jays away radio broadcasts are still being done remotely.

That was apparently Wills' choice. Rogers was okay with them travelling.

Wills complained about it virtually every broadcast.
