Those comments about Calgary are weird...no mention of the organization at all.
I have a feeling that those discussions with Calgary on Tuesday night did not end well. Treliving had made mention of "emotional" discussions.
There was a rumor on here that Edwards was involved and gave Johnny an ultimatum and final take it or leave it offer.
Have a feeling that things might have been said that soured that relationship and that somebody bungled it.
My money would be on Edwards.

This is one of the most bizarre pressers I've ever seen. Something is not adding up and I expect the true story will start to trickle out over the next few weeks.

I guess my assumption is that at some point during a 7 year period they’d have the occasional off days in certain cities and get a chance to hit up a golf course or something in a few of the markets and get a general feel for the city.
I mean of the cities I’ve visited on business trips I can tell you LA and New Jersey are a “hard no” for me ever living there, but San Francisco is a maybe and would be worth additional consideration.

In that they're not equally terrible because Cleveland is a #### hole. The worst "city I've heard of" that I've been to in my life.

He's not a great speaker. But he could've prepared better for the why Columbus/why not Calgary questions.

It literally takes 1-2 sentences and when players move they usually say something like the following:
"I want to let all the fans of Calgary know how much I appreciated everything in the past 8 years and want to thank them for all their support. I am a Columbus Blue Jacket now and am excited for the future but will never forget and will cherish my time in Calgary".
The way he answers questions it seems like something went on behind the scenes. Weird all around. He seems immature IMO but I always thought that lol.

Agreed. If it was me, I would have made that kind of statement at the start and then transitioned the focus to why Columbus.

Yeah, the end of those negotiations must have gone really south. He is getting booed at the Dome for sure now.

It’s a weird press conference. Not that he’s in a different jersey, who cares. Moreso that he’s small in stature and socially awkward. It’s clear something is on his mind with reference to his statement on the Flames, but he’s trying to be politically correct I’d think. One minute I think it’s his fault, and certainly negotiating when there’s no deep down interest, isn’t in good faith, but also I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to stick something to Treliving. Don’t forget Treliving has been rated a very tough negotiator. How much that plays into it we’ll never know but it does look like ego’s got in the way. At this point I’m happy to wash my hands from both of them.

Alright, I don’t have the time to reply to everyone’s post. But seriously, does anyone here honestly believe that the Flames, even with Gaudreau, had any chance of beating McDavid-Draisaitl? The Flames do not have playoff performers of this calibre.
I thought the Oilers outclassed the Flames in the playoffs. If Markstrom wasn’t so bad, maybe it could’ve been 6 or 7. But the Oilers have Markstrom’s number, he’s crapped the bed against them for 2 straight seasons.
So where exactly was the Flames’ advantage? We don’t have the superstar advantage. We don’t have the goaltending advantage. None of our D had any answers for the half broken Draisaitl and Connor McDavid.
In the end, the Flames would’ve needed to definitively improve to beat the Oilers. We weren’t going to be able to do that with our bad cap situation while the Oilers at the very least stayed the same. Gaudreau or no Gaudreau, the Flames were not beating the Oilers IMO, especially with the way the refs changed the way they call games now in the playoffs which severely tilts the game in favor pf McDavid and the Oilers.

So, Johnny knew he doesn't like it in Calgary. He should've told Tre that he really wanted to move out east before his m-NTC kicked in instead of saying he's still deciding and dragging everything down to the wire and then bolting.

I like how he no longer used the term "close to home" but rather "a tad closer to home". He also referred to Ohio as the East Coast. Thought it was Midwest but who am I...

They allegedly almost had something completed before the season, but only management knows why that didn’t get done. Regardless, Treliving should’ve known this was always a possibility. He heard the noise from day 1 and still played it like Johnny was any other UFA. I think had Tre been more assertive and made Johnny an offer he couldn’t refuse last year, then 13 would still be a Flame.
|
Of course he knew it was a possibility, JC. Signing Gaudreau was always a 50/50 possibility. Treliving gave it his best shot last year, and gave it not only his best shot, but the best offer on the table period, this year. Gaudreau said no. What are you going to do?
Saying he should have known is just silly hindsight. He had to try. If we are just going to trade all of our star players that are approaching UFA status, then just fold the team already.
