Love the term. Maybe expensive for where he slots on the roster but doesn’t seem Valimaki is ready for prime time so we need someone.

In isolation, yes, but I think when we consider that there is not a single Flames defenseman earning even as much as $5.0 m, there is some justification in balancing out all three pairings.

Well some would say you take the savings and pour it into elite talent vs. the players who don’t get as much ice time. But that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

Well I would disagree with that assessment but regardless he wasn't a top four... he was a bottom-pairing defenseman by ice-time.
We shouldn't be allocating that much cap to bottom-pairing/4th liners when we could be allocating it to folk that play more impactful minutes.

Elite talent such as…? Please name an elite talent that the Flames could have signed today.

Quantity of minutes is not the same as importance. Zadorov plays a role that no other defenceman on the roster could fulfil. In that respect he is like Deryk Engelland, who signed a contract here at a similar price.

Sutter put Zadorov (and Gudbranson, and Lewis etc) in positions and roles where they could succeed, and don’t see any reason to think he won’t do the same with Z and the others this year again, as far as linemates and situations.
My guess is Z gets a rough and tumble partner as he did last year.

We shouldn't have paid that much for Engelland either. If what they do is important and good then they should play more... but they don't so they aren't.
Ultimately OK is probably going to be paid a similar or greater amount of money when he signs a multi-year deal which means regardless of what playstyle you think is better someone is going to be paid more then they should to play less minutes on a lower pairing.

Can you explain why the cap space needed to be spent today?

I think the Flames essentially used the cap space to get a decent player and an asset worth a 2nd-3rd round pick at the deadline/next off-season. The key here is term. Any type of elite talent will require term, and over-payment. Right now it's all about keeping the status quo for another year, and see what this team can do without Gaudreau.

Wait, I thought big Z was signed by another team yesterday? Wow, I liked the big Z and this is great that he's coming back, not like the little G!

I saw a post in the Gaudreau thread that a poster said they can't wait until Z crushes Gaudreau. I was going to post that maybe this poster missed that Z was going elsewhere as a UFA...only to see he signed with us!
I think this is great news. Term is perfect and dollar is good. I personally prefered Zadarov > Gudbranson. Especially at their new contracts. It's Z AINEC. Still relatively young coming into his prime and he improved as the season went along.
Thought I read a rumor yesterday that Z was for sure headed elsewhere, but stoked to see we will still have some toughness on the backend.

He was reportedly offered 4x4 from Columbus.

Glad to see this but he needs a competent partner. He and Gudbranson has success because they worked well together. I feel like they both have a bit of a drop off next year.

Gotta love Big Z for sticking with the Flames especially if that rumor is true. I really can't wait until Flames play the CBJ and he crushes the little guy on center ice (you won't be able to crush Gaudreau on either end of the ice - cuz he won't be near there)!

I mean, most of us were surprised by the Zadorov/Gudbranson pairing in a very positive way, but I wonder what Columbus saw that convinced them that locking them up at a combined $8m for 4 years would have been a good idea. Oof.

If Zed was offered a 4x4 by Columbus he almost assuredly spoke with Johnny and Guds.
Would be very interested to hear an unfiltered Zadorov talk about it.

Or he was offered the 4x4 deal, he said no, so they offered the same to Gudbranson right after and he took it.

This is how it felt timeline wise.
I was convinced it was for some muscle to then go attract Johnny. But then they reported that Johnny reached out to Columbus, so that doesn’t really fit.
