any chance we could rename this thread to "Tkachuk Signing Watch Thread" to keep Gaudreau discussion separate now?

It will be interesting for Tkachuk's approach now. Johnny thought he was going to get comparable contracts on the open market and Calgary's offer still was substantially better. If Tkachuk cares about dollars, then he might be more open to re-upping long term after his 100 point season before risking free agency. In an odd way, Johnny may have made it easier to get Tkachuk signed.

He'll never see another 100point season .

Even if the Flames signed JG to 10.5M per year.. how do you think you could hold onto MT after that? We would be Edmonton Oilers 2.0 with 2 huge contracts tying up half the roster salary.

He should re-up now before a season without Johnny drives his price downward. He’s a PPG guy without Johnny.

You are probably correct. All the more reason for Tkachuk to want to re-sign after seeing Johnny's lack of success in free agency. Johnny left a lot of money on the table to sign in Columbus.

I agree that he's likely PPG without Johnny. I just wonder if Treliving suddenly has more leverage now based on the way the market played out when everyone assumed that Matthew is gone to free agency the moment Johnny leaves for big dollars elsewhere.

That might be the case, but Chucky is a pretty confident guy, so I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to gamble on himself.

I know, but the joke wouldn't work the same way. 457 miles doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

The Flames , the fans extended so much love towards both the JG family and the Tkachuks and for the JG family to do what was just done makes me think this is just the beginning. Tkachuk will pull an identical if not worse stunt here.

Gawd ....I hope I'm wrong but my gut says different.

I think there are things we can only understand if we were kids from the eastern US playing in a western Canadian city.

I don’t even think that would be gambling. He’s not hitting anywhere near the same with Tofolli in place of Gaudreau.

I’ve lived in the Northeast US my whole life and have been to both Calgary and Columbus.

It’s not even close. I would live in Calgary. I wouldn’t live in Columbus unless I was making something absurd like 4-5x what I am now.

Trev can’t let this happen with Tkachuk, either a long term deal or traded this summer. Same with Mangipane to a lesser extent.

To each their own. I think Columbus is a fantastic and friendly place. Close to many options unlike western Canada.

Someone could send a 1 year 10.5 mil offer sheet for Tkachuk. I don’t know if he would sign it and risk future earnings but it is a possibility. Compensation is 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd. So i feel like that kind of sets the market value if you’d want to trade him right now, plus whatever the ability to sign him to an 8 year deal now instead of on Jan 1 would be.

Wouldn’t be thrilled to trade Tkachuk for that package to most teams.
