I think we will know a lot more about BT and his relations with the players soon enough.
Mang, Tkachuk and Killington all need deals. If they all go long term and with in reason then who knows!

Half of the anti-Treliving people here say he’s too tough in negotiations with RFAs and half say he should have given Johnny a take or leave it ultimatum before last season, with a year to go and JG saying he wanted to stay and negotiate.

This GM has built a mediocre team and yet he spends draft capital and wastes assets like it's a contender. Like the Flames are just one more piece away from going all the way.
How can anyone defend this guy? What great thing has Brad "I love my roster" Treliving achieved here?
Get your butts kicked by Edmonton, limp into the draft with no picks, and then lose your franchise player for nothing.
How does this guy still have a job?

Vegas had the Flames second favorite to go to the final. 4th to win the cup. When would you have gone all in?

So you make your deadline trades two months after the deadline, with the playoffs already in progress?
Bold plan.

TIL that a team that finished with 106 and 11 points the last two full NHL seasons is "mediocre"
I wish we would been that mediocre the 25 years before Treliving got here.

If it was me, I'd be calling Chicago pronto to see if there is any way to get Kane to waive to come to Calgary. Instantly replace Gaudreau with the better overall version of Gaudreau.

For the same AAV as they offered Gaudreau.

The regular season is so meaningless in my opinion.
They roll into the playoffs and get embarrassed. Hurry, let's spend our 1st and 2nd round picks and hold onto our top players into FA because of ALL the playoff success we've had.

They missed the playoffs last year. They were horrible.
So the first sign of regular season success and BT is betting on the team to go deep only to get embarrassed once again.
How can you defend this GM? What has he accomplished as GM while spending to cap for the majority of his tenure?

As much as Tre has made some excellent moves over the years, allowing Johnny and Tkachuk to have overlapping expirations on their deals is extreme mismanagement.
The way those contracts were structured was a gamble that had the potential to be disastrous, and right now we're in worst case scenario.
This is an unacceptable position that he put the franchise in and I do think it’s close to a firable offence.

I think it's pretty telling when you lose a 4th round pick (from a previous GM) and can't replace him with any of your 1st or 2nd round picks.

You're the one who said the team shouldn't go all-in until they won a playoff round. Well, they weren't keeping that team together beyond this season, as we now see, so the only way to wait till after winning a round was to actually make roster moves during the playoffs. Waiting till next season would have been too late.
Sometimes you just have to take your chance when you can get it.

I think it's pretty telling when you think any old 1st or 2nd round pick should be able to replace a 115-point scorer.

They didn't gamble on anything. They got the longest term Gaudreau was willing to sign for. Tkachuk, if I recall, wanted a 4-year deal that would have walked him directly to UFA, and 3 years was the only other term he was willing to accept.
It isn't extreme mismanagement to sign players to the only contracts they will accept. What should Treliving have done: get rid of them both after their ELCs? Or maybe drug them with pentothal to make them sign different deals?

All these players are making the money partially because of Sutter.
We've learned now spending to the cap and being cheap on a coach won't work.
If there is a sportsbook that has Johnny making 115pts again let me know.
It's been 8 years for Brad, time for a change now.
