Is Gross getting fired over this?
The way this all unfolded does not add up.
Edit: unless they overplayed their hand. In which case, it adds up just fine.

“Hi Dad. Yeah, I spoke with Brad. Tough call. We talked about family and you guys and babies and stuff…. So listen Dad. We got a good offer. Yeah it’s about a season and a half less money overall. 7 years Dad! I know it’s less per season than Calgary but it’s okay; I committed to you guys and Covid and so it’s not money but about getting to you guys. Are you ready Dad? Lewis says it’s ok to tell you. I’ve signed with Columbia. Yeah! Columbia! Not British Columbia…the actual Columbia. That’s right up the street from you guys! What?!? What do you mean no Columbia. I’m still hungover from the wedding. What? Where is Columbus? …click…. Dad?”
This is the oddest timeline.

So as for Columbus, this is a hell of a deal.
I don’t mind Columbus, the city or the team. So good for them.

Just a severe kick to the nuts as a Flames fan.

Johnny Hockey bull####s the flames, loses all negotiating leverage and takes a discount to play on a crappier team still quite a ways from his home.

Maybe his or his wife's family didn't like all uncertainties during Covid and wanted them on "the right side of the border" in case something like similar happenes again? Or maybe Johnny just doesn't like Canada? There are so many possibilities, but being right next to family doesn't seem like it was the issue.

I’ll meet everyone back here in about 12 years, when Gaudreau finally speaks out on some radio interview about how badly he messed this up.

But he obviously knew there was no chance, no matter what JG and team were saying (maybe Johnny called him to make that clear out of some sense of loyalty or guilt, which would probably have been against his agent's wishes). In drawing a firm line, Tre ensured that Calgary couldn't be used as a pawn in other people's negotiations. I have some respect for that, though I still think he bungled this over the last 12 months.

I don't think Johnny hates the city, the fans or the team. Not in the slightest.
I think the offers from NJ/Phi/NYI just didn't materialize that he thought would.

I know a lot of Flames fans are pissed but I’m actually happy for Columbus fans. A small market that everyone makes fun of gets the biggest free agent available after a history of their big stars leaving in free agency. Him and Laine should make a great duo

Nothing.
Not a release. Not a post. Not a word.
It takes very little for him to come out and say something positive about his time here.
Nothing.

Maybe he didn't check the "wants to win" box that the Flames covet after all.
