I'm honestly surprised Johnny and the Flames wouldn't look at doing a one-year deal in Calgary. See what it's like in Calgary for Johnny, the Wife with the Baby. If it sucks, leave next year. If it's great, sign long-term in Calgary next year.

I think people are setting themselves up for disappointment, he's not coming back. We lost the 8th year card, we done.
Maybe's he's seeing what Philly can make happen before he commits to anyone else? Maybe the offer from NJ was with a "hometown discount", so he's trying to have it upped? Lots of possibilities.

Apparently Columbus offered 7x$12mm. I blame the Flames for this whole thing if he ends up getting more than we had offered.

They still had less points than any Flames team in franchise history

If he does sign with NJ, I blame those ####ty Flames jerseys with the cursive writing a few years back that had the similar colour scheme to the NJ colours. I don't care if it doesn't make sense, I'm upset and need something to blame.

I live in Ohio and might actually go down to Columbus and watch the Jackets play a few games if he signed there. But I know it’s just negotiating tactics and he ain’t going there

HUGE risk.
Coming off his best season now is the time to cash in.
You never know what can happen. Worse year, injury, etc.
Not worth that risk at all.

And if he gets injured, kiss $80M away.
I'm honestly shocked if anyone took that risk.

For a player in his prime you never know if you get a career-ending injury so you take max term no questions.

Only Taylor Hall would take this risk.

Having Gaudreau at $12million/year doesn't really let you build a contending team. Gaudreau is amazing, but is also the type of player who requires solid linemates to play with, as Gaudreau's game is incomplete in some ways. Gaudreau is not physical in any way, not the fastest skater end to end, and has a muffin (although a deceptive muffin) of a shot. He needs a solid centre who is a top end trigger man and responsible defensively and a RW who can play physically and take advantage of space that Gaudreau creates.
The Flames lucked out having Lindholm singed at a steal, but most teams, are looking at close to a $30 million first line. Not a whole lot left to build the rest of the team out.
This is especially true if you just spent $4 million on a bottom pairing d-man.

Very true points, but I do believe when you have a player who has the chance to be the best in your teams history, set records and have his number retired, you should be willing to retain that at the highest market rate. If he signs for more, than it means the Flames lowballed their best player, or didn't comprehend what the market was.

So if a team offered him 15,000,000 a year the Flames need to offer him 15,000,001 and all but ensure they won’t win for a near decade? Nah. Just cause some other team might offer him more doesn’t mean the Flames should.

Or it means some teams are desperate, have almost an empty roster, and are willing to vastly overpay for UFAs. If you go about life assigning value to things based on the most outrageous and highest estimates, then you aren't going to get very far.
Teams like Columbus and Seattle, who are desperate just to get butts in the seats, shouldn't be setting the standards for player value.
The Flames offer was very generous, and they unlike Seattle and Columbus, need to build a competitive team. I'd rather move on from Gaudreau than sign him to a contract that makes building a competitive team impossible. He's not Crosby or McDavid. You aren't winning any championships with Gaudreau unless he's surrounding by one heck of a cast.

Nope. But if 11x8 would have got it done and the Flames didn't offer it, they've made a huge mistake.
