Also, I'm curious if anyone here would be happy with John at 7 x 12M AAV?
IMO 12 is a bridge too far. I'd have been sore at 11 but accepted it.

But I think he's still have rejected it thinking there'd be something a little better than 10.2 in a bidding war between Philly and NJD and maybe NYI.

There are way more economical options.

Some are as cheap as $1500 per hour for turboprops. There are also semi-private options where you basically rideshare, etc.

This is an hour flight, not a six hour flight we are talking about.

No one thought it was about travel time. It was about living in the same community or right thereabout. It's about coming over for coffee or getting some sitting help.

And your lesser cost options are more time anyway. Rideshares are again on a timetable. Turboprops are horrible and take longer - it'd be a 2 hour flight (it's not just one hour even now - it's 1.5).

Johnny has missed two.

Stone plays in a city with no state tax - his $9.5M in Vegas is $10.5M in Calgary.

So we offer Johnny $9.5M in Tampa/Vegas Money, to play in Canada.

Seems like a pretty easy thing to refuse
But he wants to sign in NJ/Penn so what is the tax rate in those states?

If he signs, he's 2.5 hours from me. Not that I would drive just to see him play.

No, the price just goes up if you're going to a deadhead.

I thought you were talking about flying to CGY. Staying within the general NE area of the US would be a different story

Coffee was only ever an option with the Flyers.

I always thought it was a matter of getting more like 3 trips per season for each set of grandparents instead of 1. Plus Xmas together. And Momma+baby making a trip or two the other way. And timezones. And dada getting home from a road trip at 1am instead of 5am.

If it was about having someone come over to babysit and having the family around, the Flames should have paid to move everyone to Calgary.

To me there is something more going on which I don't get. NHL players all have kids, families & wives and all of the move all over North America to play hockey. I can't remember the last time I heard of a player turning down a legit chance to compete for a Stanley Cup with a competitive team because of 'family decision', and that being due to location. Anyone else?

Claude Girioux just went from Philly to Florida to Ottawa in a few months. He has young kids too.

Probably out to lunch on this but... I kind of wonder if the Caps or Pens could sign Johnny and then trade one or two of their high priced wingers to make the cap space...

Columbus is supposed to be nice from what I hear. Not an exciting place, but "pleasant".

Philly is a cool city, but man there is a big dark underbelly in that city. I am sure the wealthy stay out of the bad areas, but if there is ever an all out class war in America, that place will probably be ground zero. There is one stretch that is like a worse version of Vancouver's downtown eastside, but it seems to go on for miles instead of a few blocks. In fact, I am 99% sure that I witnessed an armed robbery the one time I drove through. You drive, and you don't stop.

Do you see a discernible difference in the odds that CGY vs. NJD vs. CBJ win a cup in the next 7-8 years?

Giroux is going home, too...

It's sad to say, but it could well be that Guy Gaudreau's heart is getting worse and he's been advised to avoid long-distance travel. If so, that would give Johnny an extra reason to keep his new kid close to the grandparents while he still has them all.

All the adjectives that describe Columbus, I've heard equally applied to Calgary.

Giroux basically went home too. He is an Ontario Francophone who just signed in the Ontario Francophone capital. Being from Hearst, Ottawa is probably his home team.

That's the fan's assumptions.

Maybe its about seeing family 10-20 times per year rather than 2-5.

I don't know. I'm not in Johnny's head, but I think it would be unfair to say signing in Columbus means proximity to family didn't play into the decision.

All well and good.

If you have a max number for Gaudreau internally, offer it to him before the draft. If he says no, you can trade his rights and explore that deal with NJ for Tkachuk.

He’s a 29-year old 115 point UFA winger who scored 99 points in 2019.

You either want that guy on your team or you don’t, and the time to decide you don’t is not 12 hours before the opening of free agency.

I get that.

But the solution to that could easily be to move his mom and dad to Calgary.

Like I said, I don't really get the decision here. He'll have a boatload of money. He could easily buy them a house & keep them close.

After 15 years, is that home?

NHL players are gone from home usually around age of 15, no?

I don't think its home like home is to us normal people. I don't live where I was born or grew up either, and I don't really miss it because my family is with me.

There are countless stories of NHL players moving their parents to the city where they play.
