It is not close. It is a 90 minute flight with only 3 direct flights each day.
If you were to drive from Columbus to Philly it would take you 440 minutes.
You can get from Philadelphia to Calgary with only one stop in less than 480 minutes.
Both Calgary and Columbus can be reached from Philadelphia.

Well they're pretty similar players in the their leagues right? I guess Lebron is viewed almost a god for what he's done.

Columbus is less than a 2 hour flight, true, but add in getting to and from the airport, getting on the plane, etc, and you've wasted half a day. And you live in Columbus.
EDIT: and as was noted above, you don't get to fly whenever you want. You fly when there's a flight. Inconvenient for a little visit. Wanting family during the baby's first years maybe means she'd like her mom over every day or so.

NYI/NJ/PHI are all understandable. If he signs in Columbus for the same money as the Flames offered then he can go #### himself.

If he's using CLB to leverage his offer in NJ and it doesn't work, it will admittedly be amusing to see how much money he surrendered closing the door on the Flames.
Hope it was worth it bud.

Calgary should be saying:
"Sure, you can come back, the term is now 7 years and the AAV starts at $10.5 and declines by $500k every hour."

He's their only RFA this summer and they have quite a lot of cap space.

This would get way funnier if Columbus publicly announced they didn't make that offer.

Neither is NJ, or PHI for that matter. I think that’s what I find most hilarious about this situation, is that Gaudreau, wherever he lands, is likely out of the playoffs for 2, and possibly 3 seasons. By the time these teams are good enough in the East to make the playoffs, Johnny will be beginning the downslope of his career.
If winning mattered at all to him, he would have signed here and then forced a trade in a couple to three years when they Flames started to become less competitive/ when these other teams hit their stride.
As it stands right now, and of these non-playoff teams in the east are in very very tough to unseat the top 8 eastern teams. There was a massive go between playoffs and non-playoffs in that conference.
If he’s really signing for family reasons good for him, but in the process he’s showing the hockey world that winning and money are less of a priority. Seems so odd to me since he was always such a competitive guy as a Flame, but perhaps a bullet was dodged with a guy who maybe doesn’t want to do what it takes to win

The very fact that this has come out suggests that he's not getting the same money from from either the Devils or the Islanders. Given his known desire to be near home, that Columbus offer isn't much leverage unless there's a very substantial gap between it and what the Devils/Isles are offering.
