I had a serious atrial-Fibrillation on Monday that took me to the hospital. I've lived with it for about 30 years but usually my heart would reset. This time it didn't and they had to shock it to normalcy.
They've now put me on blood thinners to hopefully prevent blood clots in the future. but they've talked about things like easy bleeding, random nose bleeds and other stuff.
Was just wondering if anyone else here is living on these things and if there's some insights into what I should look out for.
Thanks

That is tough to hear. Hope you are doing ok with recovery right now.
I was on blood thinners for a year and a bit a while ago. The biggest thing for me was whenever there was a cut or a nosebleed, it would take longer to stop. Need to apply extra pressure and longer to have it clot and stop bleeding. You'll probably bruise a lot easier and bigger too if you take a bump.
Otherwise, I don't recall any major disruptions in lifestyle other than just mentally being more careful not to cut myself, like while cooking or shaving.
Take care of yourself and hope you can recover 100%!

I have been on blood thinners for a couple of years, and haven't encountered any problems. No real increase in nose bleeds, or problems related thereto. Just the odd one, as usual, in the coldest part of the winter, when the air in the house is the driest.

Sorry to hear that Cap'n. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I haven't any direct experience, but some family members of mine have had to take warfarin.
In my family it was a case of keeping all the knives in the house sharp (less chance of slipping and cutting yourself), making sure everyone knows basic first aid in case of a bleeding episode, stashing band aids around the house and occasionally running grandpa to the PLC for a shot of vitamin K.
You'll want to avoid aspirin (ASA) and any other medications that contain salicylates. Watch out for Pepto Bismol.
Also, grapefruit juice. It can increase the impact of your blood thinners.

Not myself but my Dad has been on blood thinners for ~25 years due to blood clots, aside from bruising a little easier and cuts taking a little more effort to stop bleeding he hasn't had any significant issues.

Sorry to hear, Capt.
I had a pulmonary embolism nine years ago and subsequent testing discovered I have Factor V blood disorder which makes me prone to clotting. As a result, I am on Xarelto for life. My doc orders blood work annually to monitor liver function and so far no issues with it. If you absolutely need to take a pain reliever, it has to be Tylenol.
I've cut myself and I continue to play sports and I haven't had any issues. I ride my bike knowing full well a crash may cause some internal bleeding that goes undetected. The doctor told me to avoid that type of activity but he fully acknowledged I have to balance the risk with quality of life. I mitigate the risk by staying off the roads as much as possible.

I was on Xeralto for six months after a blood clot and pulmonary embolism. We think the clot was the result of a sports injury, followed by a long flight. I did have nose bleeds constantly on Xeralto. I've been fine ever since and haven't needed blood thinners again.
Sorry to hear CC! Thats scary. Glad everything seems to be returning to normal.
I was on blood thinners a couple years ago. I hurt the veins in the back of my old-man knees after back-catching for my son for too many hours in a row. Just trauma from squatting too long, as best I could eve figure. Kinda similar to Troutman perhaps.
I was on Heparin injections for 6 months. I literally could not tell that I was. No increase in bleeding, clotting, nosebleeds, bruising, or anything. I cut myself in the garage once and it was the same as always, so I even played men's league hockey for the last 2 months of the 6.
