I wonder if he received poor advice from his agent in terms of process, timing etc - in that he could have wound up in the same place at the end of the day while giving the Flames other options.
Perhaps another agency would have handled things differently.
But this is why he needed to take the bull by the horns and do it right, because giving your rights holding team some options is a no brainer, agent advice be damned. The agent works for him, not the other way around.
I can't help but think Gaudreau isn't a guy that takes initiative well. At least he was good enough to have that honest discussion in the end, but it doesn't mean a lot when you're leaving that team without a life boat.
And just to add to people still pining for Johnny to pivot back to Calgary.
1. Tre was very clear that is not something he expected (testing free agency vs. leaving Calgary)
2. His agent and himself would have talked thru that outcome because it costs him a year and I just don't see that...i.e. he can only sign 7-year terms now.
His agent must have a good handle on the market and they're trying to squeeze out the best deal period while having him close to home, that's all.
Yeah not going to happen but Johnny may regret it a little if he left too much money on the table

Its also possible that certain dominos need to fall for whatever deal is brewing to go through.
The thing is, even if he were to pivot back to Calgary...that would be a tough sell and he's burned that 8th year, as you said.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
He is going to Philly. If he was going to NJ it would have been done. I think he is just waiting for them to do whatever moves they have to for them to afford him.

That's my take too.
Devils likely have the best offer on the table right now. But Gaudreau is holding out hope that Philly can make the space for him because that's his preferred destination.
Money clearly isn't the determining factor here either...he likely gave up about $12-14M in guaranteed salary by not taking the Flames $10.5M x 8 offer yesterday.
Calgary should be on the phone with Philly to be honest. I'd be okay with taking Konecny or Provorov off their hands for free.
Nvm, misread your post. Yeah Calgary can't offer 8 anymore either.. He knowingly gave up a fair bit of dough yesterday.

Nope, I think Gross is squeezing them. And I think the offers may be coming in a little lower than anticipated. I feel like people here are in a bit of a bubble as to values other teams assign to players.

The worst part is when he wins the Hart with a season that was worse than the one he had with us, but now he's out east so people will actually watch him.
