And he's 31 years old.

We should have a poll up on what each person wants:
1) tank and rebuild
2) remain competitive
I'm in the latter, I'm tired of rebuilding with this team over and over again, even my wife makes fun of me always saying the Flames are still rebuilding.

I mean I cant confirm that he will but What I've herd is he was looking at a 4-5 year deal at big money in Calgary to cash in on another pay day south of the boarder but with Johnny moving on his team is leaning towards taking his huge season this year and parlaying it into a big long term deal in the US.

There is a lot of real estate in the middle where a team is neither competitive nor tanking. That is the area that no one wants to be. Unfortunately, I think trying to remain competitive at this point lands us in that middle area and prevents contention longer than a rebuild. Neither is a guarantee for anything of course.

You mean the little hit on the radio this morning? Arguably he can get more money from the Flames now.

If they are rebuilding, then Sutter has to go too. Or at least move him to an advisor role. I don't know if he is going anywhere though.

Yea, Sutter is the coach, and we all love him. But his being here for one more season cannot dictate the direction of the franchise.

Every team starts a rebuild by accident that was the Oilers 2006-2010. But really once they were bad in that 09-10 season and drafted Hall they leaned into the re-build.
We made fun of them for 4 seasons for tanking on purpose to get 1st overall picks in that stretch.
Made fun of how they were so excited to draft 1st overall, had lottery parties, and draft parties.
Made fun of their Oil Change documentary following around their fancy new young top picks.
But no they didn't embrace the re-build at all

Sure I don't listen to the fan960 personally as I feel its just absolute trash beside Pat Steinberg. Maybe they hear the same things. Don't shoot the messenger.
Could he get more money from the flames now via 8 year deal sure, I don't buy it that he would sign it. I think 8 year deal anywhere is going to be big money but if he wont sign 8 in Calgary then you might as well trade him while his value is high and both parties are happy.

The oilers get zero credit for landing McDavid. That was luckiest of all the luckiest things I think I've ever seen.
That steaming pile of garbage sucked so bad for so many years finishing dead last and hording 1st overalls, that the league got sick of it and lowered the odds of last place getting the 1st overall pick.
Lo and behold that burning pile of dog #### that calls itself a hockey franchise manages to suck a tiny bit less that exact season and finish a few spots higher on the standings. And because of the increased odds they then got because the league changed them (because of THEM) they won the goddamn lottery again.
Meanwhile, the Flames draft a 22 year old Norris winner in the 3rd round and he never plays a game for us.

Yeah, that is the real dagger Gaudreau's timing did. I totally buy the Devils were offering the 2nd overall for Tkachuk. Tkachuk would be the guy here though and he seems to have the personality to be into that.
We'll see. Will be a crappy return if he goes the QO route.

There's no denying the luck for McDavid. Picking a Norris trophy-winning defenceman in the 3rd round is equally as lucky, otherwise he doesn't go in the 3rd round.

I believe NJ targeted Tkachuk because at the point in the draft, I feel both parties were signaling a signing in Calgary for JG. However that didn't happen and life goes on.
Tkachuk would bring huge value to any US market. He stirs the pot and puts butts in seats. the way hockey is marketed in Canada is way different then how its sold in the US. Just look at arena atmospheres in Dallas, Colorado and Carolina.

Picking Fox was a swing at a high ceiling talent who had a huge question mark. And so was the Gaudreau pick for that matter.
