Love his Flames career, but if you let others influence your career decisions, and most of your choices are made with others at the forefront then you're just not being true to yourself.

Sometimes it's a hard choice that not everybody is on board with, but end of the day you do what's right for you, and you make the rest (family life) work around it because its your job to be the leader as a man. That's my belief.
These posts are getting to be 10/10 embarassing. So a family man should disregard his family and do whatever the hell he wants and your significant other and kids have no opinions? That screams successful marriage/relationship etc.

Reminds me of that time Cal Nichols basically told Pronger to forget about his marriage and stay on the Oilers. Ridiculous.

Yeah, this thread is getting shameful. Personal or family attacks should have no place.

Clown.
Because the writing has been on the wall for weeks? I dont think Johnny was swaying in the wind about a decision until 8pm last night, then all of a sudden it was all "im not coming back.". It was fairly obvious when they didnt sign an extension soon after the season, when it came out that he wasnt sure what he wanted to do, when seravelli wrote a piece about johnny where "when does no answer become the answer?"

If he wanted to be here he would have signed.

He drug it out either because he didnt want to make a hard decision, or because his agent was playing the org.

Tre ignored the obvious signs and lost another top player for nothing.

Clown? Why the personal insults?

None of the players you draft outside of lottery picks will be NHL-ready for years, and most of them won't be ready ever.

So suppose you do somehow get 16 picks for your 10 best players. How many NHLers do you think you're going to get back for it?

True to yourself can also mean putting your family first, because for a lot of people, they’re lucky enough to see their partners as partners in life, and their kids as their kids, not some accessories that need to be worked around their career.

Based on our interactions over the past couple months, I’d say you’re one of the posters I would trust least in terms of advice on how to be “a real man.” These posts read like they come from an embarrassing loner with arrested development. You can do better than that.

This is going to sound like I'm Don Cherry but to me it's time to consider not drafting Americans anymore. They all just leave as soon as they are 27. Tkachuk is not going to stay either.
Sounds a bit dramatic but I would focus on Western Canadian players who have roots here.
Disagree that this is specifically an issue with American-born players. Remember that Conroy stuck around with this team for years even when we were toiling with mediocrity.

But you have to notice the pattern here with American-born players that the Flames have recently drafted that don't stick around with the team long-term. Fox refused to even sign an ELC with us.

Now I wonder about Coronato who looks like a promising prospect for the Flames. Is he going to pull the same stunt as Fox, or end up playing for the Flames only to leave after a few years because he wants to play closer to home?

If I were the Flames GM, I wouldn't stop drafting / signing American players. I would just be extremely cautious with them and understand what their career priorities are both in the short- and long-term. And if they seem indecisive or likely to bolt after a few years with the team, I wouldn't even bother taking that risk with them. Better to draft a Canadian-born player who would likely be thrilled with the idea of playing for a Canadian team.

All three of the following can be true at the same time:

Johnny:
a) liked his time here in Calgary - loved his teammates and the city,
b) had a difficult time decided if he wanted to play out the next 8 years here (in Canada),
c) he kinda screwed his former team by dragging his feet so long on a decision and by saying all the right things.

This is the era of player empowerment - Johnny and his team was always going to dictate how this played out. He has that right.

From Tre's side, what was he gonna do? Tre acted in good faith and thought he would be able to sign him based on what I'm assuming were the conversations held behind closed doors and the communications from Johnny to the media. Tre looked pisssssssed during that conference call.

Especially for a small market team like Calgary - if we honestly think a superstar is going to stay with us/sign with us, we are going to walk down that road with that player and hope it becomes reality.

So, the reason he hasn't signed yet is they're slow-rolling the actual signing to reduce the appearance of tampering, yeah?

I actually think this is a sign that Johnny was very conflicted. Had he signed right away, then obviously, he knew what he wanted to do kind of all along.

So we can probably put to bed with the whole Johnny holding out stuff to screw the Flames over stuff as it appears Johnny still is undecided on what to do still at this very moment.

Being the leader as a man means you put your family and child first.

You're assuming that somehow Gaudreau was influenced by outside voices. I think he's making the mature decision as a husband and father.

The type of comments being exhibited in this thread are, IMO, an example of why players (including Canadians) increasingly don’t want to play in Canadian markets.

I don't do the twitter, but if it's this embarrassing here I can't imagine what that cesspool is like.

Some of you people are such butthurt losers. Get a grip.

It sucks that he left, and it sucks that it took him to the last day to decide, but get over it, it's just sports and he was well within his rights.

It's fine to hope he doesn't ever make the playoffs again with his new team and stuff like that, but leave his ####ing family alone with your idiotic comments.

Or it could be that he wanted to go home to the east coast but also wanted to maximize the contract amount from whoever signed him. So he and his agent dragged the process out to squeeze the highest possible offer from the Flames in hopes of parlaying that into more money from the bidding teams out east.

I think Gaudreau liked in playing Calgary and would still like to play here considering his attachment to some teammates, etc. But, his sights were always focused on going back and playing with the Flyers when his UFA window opened and now that he has a baby on the way and finally the opportunity to be close to his family, etc. Flyers need to move money to make him fit and I'd bet that's what's going on. If that doesn't pan out, no doubt he's contemplating his other options in the Eastern conference. If Philly were in NJ's situation with the cap, the deal would have been done first thing this morning, IMO
