Rooney is likely to pass through waivers, but this is a one-way contract. Will have to go through waivers once a month to be sent down.

Not sure if that's what the Flames intend here.

I thought Kevin Rooney was a linesman.

I can't remember watching him play at all, but I am sure he is a fine depth player. If he works out, this is a great move. If not, well, he can either be the 13th forward or go to the AHL. You don't want Ruzicka sitting as the 13th forward anyway IMO.

Ya, that's right. I guess they would risk losing him.

Given the news last night I honestly kind of hope the Flames just sit the big fish battle out today.

Let the dust settle.

It matters(to me) because that's not where I want the Flames to be spending their energy today. I'm sure the Flames have had numerous contingency plans for Gaudreau leaving, but this signing is something you do only after you choose a direction.

I guess it just feels as though we just got new tires for a car that needs a new engine. I mean it's great we got them tires but it's not going anywhere any time soon.

I honestly think the flames could just skip the big fish all together. Sign Mangiapane, Kylington and Tkachuk to long term contacts. Then fill out the roster with their own prospects and some depth signings like this one. There won't be much cap space left.

What's the point of buying out Monahan and Lucic? Might as well just clear their cap hits at the end of the season when their contracts expire.

I agree. I doubt the Flames will do it but they are well positioned to possibly pick up some contracts on the cheap with teams that are tight on the cap after today. Maybe even swallow some salary and get some picks out of the process. Figure out what they want to do with Tkachuk.

I'd rather have a chance of getting Brodie/Gaudreau type players in the later rounds though. If you have to overpay your 4th line center $200k it doesn't matter.

But without impact top line/top pair players you aren't making any noise.

Of course, it helps not to lose your top line/top pair players for nothing...

With cap space so valuable, I don't understand spending on 4th line players before you get major parts figured out first. This has a Pitlick vibe to it for me. Already down 1.3m before we get our direction figured out first.

Treliving doesn’t seem to value cap space very much. Must use all of it every time it frees up.

Why did they just guve 2x1.3 to a 4th line plug? What is this teams fascination with overpaying 4th liners? The guys got 45 career points.

I am always perplexed how players like this command more than one year or more than the buried contract threshold ($1,125,000). Both is…interesting. Where is the leverage?

Obviously a minor gripe, and the Flames are unlikely to use the ~$800,000 in wasted deadline day capspace the difference represents in either year, but strange process in a league where efficiency is paramount.

With Gilbert, Meloche and Rooney, and re-signing Tkachuk, Kylington and Mangiapane, plus more depth guys, do the Flames even have the cap space to sign an actual player when the dust settles?

Who could have possibly been in competition with Calgary for this player that we had to offer $1.3 million over two years?
