If some of the trade proposals for Tkachuk on here came true, it could save the team:

To St.Louis for Kyrou,1st, Tarasenko

To Ottawa for Norris,1st,Pinto

I guess NJ is out now that they will presumably be signing Gaudreau, but Mercer/1st/Zacha would be nice.

One year of Tkachuk won't get that St Louis package.

You really think Calgary is going to negotiate with a team that the Tkachuk Team isn't willing to sign with. Walt probably knows which owners are willing to pay for the circus and the price is negotiated.

Yeah, but why would a teams give up significant assets for an extra year of Tkachuk. Rental trades are usually mediocre unless a Chicago situation happens.

If Flyers can’t afford Gaudreau and Devils are the more likely team for his service (Isles rumored to be interested too), I wonder how things would have been if Tkachuk had been moved to New Jersey, if they indeed were interested.

Deal didn't happen and maybe this was Jerseys thoughts along. I personally believe Philly is the team Johnny signs with, Jersey is the driver of the bus to the bank. 11.5x7 Tomorrow somewhere in that range is the speculation.

Terrible deal for them and a terrible decision for Gaudreau if that is true

Agreed.

He should be choosing Devils over Flyers. I think he will be a Devil. Philly isn’t paying the price to get rid of the JVR contract. Devils makes more sense.
10.5 x 7 in New Jersey.

If played right Calgary could benefit from their cap issue. Konency could be had cheaper.

2 years left 5.5 Million RW/LW RHS. Could probably use a change of scenery, Canadian boy. 25 Years old. Long term RW/RHS is still a bit of a question mark.

There is Provorov but 3 years @ 6.75 - Not something Calgary covets but cap space is a weapon and he could be flipped after a short stop in Calgary.

Don't sleep on Travis Sanhiem either that's one to watch if they get Johnny.

7 Years is a long time to turn it around we have had him for 8 and we've seen lots of ups and downs here, If he wants to win maybe sooner he goes to NJD. I think there is a family legacy appeal in the Philadelphia/Salem area and frankly NJD is a better consolation prize for him than Calgary.

One or two bad years and he's 31 and primed to compete. He's very durable and I don't question his longevity in the current NHL. That can change fast obviously and is no longer our problem but is highly unlikely.

He has a house in Jersey and he has an annual golf tournament there and is actually hosting it on July 29. I understand the Philly connection but the Jersey area is familiar to him too.

The tournament is in Egg Harbor City, NJ, which is near the south end of New Jersey, much closer to Philadelphia than it is to Newark. As I understand it, most sports fans in southern New Jersey are Philly fans and couldn't care less about teams in greater New York. And I do know that Gaudreau grew up cheering for the Flyers, and definitely not the Devils.

Like I said, Jersey is the driver to the bank in Philly. Calgary fuelled the vehicle.

People keep saying this, but nobody has explained what relevance it has. The Flames made an 8-year offer that nobody else could make, and Gaudreau turned it down because he doesn't want to play here. It's history now. Neither Philly nor Jersey nor any Eastern team has any need to compete with the terms Calgary was willing to give. All that matters is how their offers compete against each other, and that would still be true if the Flames had made no offer at all.

Will somebody please tell me what I'm missing here?

He already has a deal with another team, used the Flames best offer as leverage

In any good contract negotiation you need someone to be willing to drive your price point. Johnnys is 80+ million which Calgary did with 8x10. Johns representative lit the smoke signal with leaks of Calgary going above 80 Million, Previously offer before the season was the Kucherov 76. Multiple Eastern teams signal back that they can drive for roughly the same price tag of 80+ Million. Once you have multiple signals you no longer need to consider Calgary. These eastern teams will bid even some teams you won’t think about.

You can do the math but I think every team out east knows 7x12 is probably unrealistic in the cap era forecasting which equals Calgary’s offer of 84 Million. However if a team is close and wants to close a deal they may go there.

Johnny clearly valued the extra 4-5 Million from Calgary less than the value of being at home in the area. So you can remove 7x12 from the equation at the time of him informing Calgary and it’s safe to assume he may shave off ~250K to ~750K from 12 Million AAV for the team he wants. Tomorrow every team in the area that wants johns service know the price is already predetermined and it’s just clauses/structure but expect buyout proof and maybe escrow protection on that front. Besides that he’s really just going to formally commit to a new team.

I will be absolutely shocked if Johnny signs for anything less than 80+ million tomorrow. If that happens, Calgary had zero chance even at a silly number like 11-12x8

I don’t think they’d have an issue with extending him.

They’re paying the premium to us so they can give him the 8th year and lower his cap.

The Tkachuks are a circus and it’s great for business. I don’t think Matthew wants to go through a rebuild retool restructure reorganization whatever you want to label it in Calgary specifically. He wants to get paid and his name is farm more popular in a US market then Canada. If anyone knows it’s Walt, his name is all over US Hockey and the Leagues summit of owners.
