Yep.

I believe it is 88% of Stanley Cup Champions in the modern era are built on top-3 draft picks. 15 of 17 Stanley Cup Champions.

What's ridiculously stupid about it? Did you really think that one year of Gaudreau (with no chance to re-sign) was going to be worth more than a late 1st and a prospect?

And what percentage of non-championship teams are built on top-3 prospects? Pretty similar, you'll find. There is no correlation.

All the stars have to align for a Canadian team to win the Cup, let alone a small market team like Calgary.

I love Johnny but I also feel we've dodged a bullet as his salary would have been so high that it would have been difficult to piece a team around him and really handcuffed us moving forward.

It doesn’t matter - if Montreal takes Wright, you take Slafkovsky. Or the American centre Arizona took. Or the defense man who’s now Gaudreau’s team mate.

Anything is a better result than this.

Instead, you have no Gaudreau and you’re staring down the barrel of the exact same situation with Tkachuk.

It’s lunacy. You have an offer on the table for 2OA. You go to Gaudreau and say “in or out”.

If he says out, you secure the top 2 pick.

95% of the board would’ve done that. Not slow walked him up to 4 hours before you couldn’t offer him 8 years.

What sort of fool does that.

Brad Treliving, that’s who.

So why tonight and not tomorrow evening after the FA rush for the day is over and JG had a new (maybe) home?

Is there any chance anything he said or the immediate reaction to this has any chance to away JG to feel some sort of guilt or sadness as well and reconsider?

To be clear, not clinging onto hope for that or have even the slightest thought it will occur, but the presser timing and suddeness seemed a bit out of character and had to be more then just to let the fans and media know directly.
Or could've been to control the message...I fully expect a full page "Thank you" from Johnny on the paper and the Flames website in the coming days and rather the Flames letter to be first to report it.

Anyways...

Do you really want a re-considered Johnny here?

Honestly, I can appreciate some poster’s optimism, but I’d be very surprised if the Flames were a playoff team next season.

Here are Johnny’s 21-22 season splits (wins and losses).

In Wins:
50gm - 32g - 61a - 93p

In Losses:
21gm - 5g - 8a - 13p

In OTL:
11gm - 3g - 6a - 9p

Just look at how reliant this team was on Johnny’s line just to win games. There’s an extremely high correlation between Johnny’s production and the competitiveness of this team. I’ve always remarked on this before, dating all the way back to 2017, but honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it quite a this level prior to this past season.

It’s playing the odds. How many of the last cup winners built around top 1-2 draft picks?

Colorado? Yes
Chicago? Yes
LA? (Maybe the most arguable, with Doughty a second overall)
Pittsburgh? Yes
Washington? Yes
Tampa? Yes

St. Louis and maybe Boston are the only exceptions. Calgary if it won with this core would have fit into this category. But they didn’t. Could Boston have won if Bergeron left the team in 2010? No.

It’s not a guarantee but is the most likely path.

I just saw the presser (it's available on the NHL app) and I actually feel better seeing Treliving speak about it. Despite him obviously being disappointed, he's clearly not going to make any dumb moves or knee jerk reactions after losing Johnny.

You need top-3 picks, and you need to be one of the best managed teams in the league.

You can do one without the other and you'll win nothing.

Carolina had Staal. Even Anaheim had Pronger.

Detroit didn’t have a top-2 pick. Even the Bruins had one, albeit via Toronto in the Kessel trade. Who was himself a top-5 pick.

Should Coulda Woulda... You stand where you stand today. Your best player on the roster is moving on. He was the heartbeat of this group. Hence why people were fine throwing 11x8 +++ at Johnny to keep him here.

Retain anything you need to for 2 years, hard sell. Conor Bedard is no joke, his basement is Mackinnon. Ask oiler fans if its painful having Connor McDavid and Draisaitl. Ask Toronto if it hurts watching Matthews and Marner every night.

Gamble hard. The NHL is a business. The new arena + Bedard in Calgary can come together. EVERYONE in this city will forget Johnny quickly. You can build around that. Revenue sharing prevents any real damage for the owners. Dome at 30% is still more revenue than Arizona, think about that.

Anyone on good contract is extremely valuable to other teams.

Markstrom - Edmonton? Toronto? Vegas? Vezina Trophy Finalist don't become available everyday. You can retain, some of these teams view this as their biggest hole. We have Dustin Wolfe cooking and he's ahead of schedule in development folks.

Lindholm - 4.85 2 more years. Selke runner up? Sure looks like he could plug alot of holes in NYR, Tampa, Boston, Pittsburg, LA

Hanifin - 4.95 2 more years. Minute Chewing responsible LD, Provides decent offence but is paid to chew minutes.

Tkachuk- 9 Million RFA 1 year to UFA, maybe the most valuable asset in the org. He just wants to get paid and to be in the USA.The family is basically a mini-NHL franchise owner complete with its own road show.

Dont forget the likes of Tanev, Coleman, Toffoli all could plug holes on teams and cap space can be weaponized. 26 Million today with no Chucky signed.

Now is not the time to spend that on the Palats, Kadri, Trochek of the world.

Part of me is glad there isn't an expected over-reaction, part of me is worried about an under-reaction.

Just do something, shake up the roster, go into a rebuild, whatever. Don't just start next season with the same forward core minus Gaudreau plus random plugs.

Is it confirmed there was an offer for Tkachuk for the number 2 overall pick?
