I know the Flames are a cap team but i'd like to support that obvious claim with some supported data.

Hence I'm asking the Flames community.

There's an interview I've been thinking of a lot lately with Gaudreau just after he signed his second contract. I think it was on Spittin' Chicklets, and he was being interviewed along with one of the Hayes brothers. The topic of RFAs and offer sheets came up, and the interviewer asked Gaudreau if he had any interest or considered signing one.

Gaudreau seemed pretty sour about his RFA status at the time; because he played the 1 game against Vancouver in 2014, he wasn't eligible to receive offer sheets and did not seem impressed at how he didn't have any leverage or negotiating ability.

That particular exchange stood out to me at the time, and I've really been playing it over and over in my head the last couple of days.

I'll see if I can find it and post it.

Oh I fully understand that. I respect that. I've been away from Calgary for 8 years, with an 8 year old grandkid/cousin/nephew. The pull to come back is stronger than ever.

But I loved my time away so far. I've found my own way w my wife and my own family, and our bond is stronger than ever. I have an extremely close knit family, so I understand the desire to be home.

But my thought was that he could sign an absolutely monumental dollar figure, have his full legacy realized and then come home on a short term deal in the end, with his child(Ren) at an age they will remember their time w family.

Anyhow, that's me. Unfortunately it's not happening

As I said, I'm disappointed. I honestly don't even have the words to describe my emotions now. Melancholy, sad, dejected. As a life long flames fan, this hurts to see

No, I’m saying losing games the way they did shouldn’t constitute as “barely competitive”.

That’s literally the opposite of a fact. It’s all opinion and a bunch of it is wild speculation.

Oh yeah, Johnny turned down an extra $10 million to the detriment of his career and family to spite management because they didn’t protect Gio. Lol.

You’d love it too. Live in the Hamptons, private schools for the kids. The best of everything and head to the cottage when you need a break from the hustle and bustle.

Father having heart issues. Wife from Philly. So many dots to connect this seemed like an inevitability and maybe the fans (myself included) and the team got caught up in a great regular season and romanticized a fairy tale ending that was never going to happen. It's time to move on now and see what happens in the coming week as the 2022/23 Flames are going to have a bit of a different flavor to them for better or worse.
This is what kills me. I really do feel like the writing was on the walls for some time. In life it's hard to sacrifice things today for tomorrow, but it's how you build something worth building.

While it may have been sad to connect the dots and say goodbye to the player years ago, the dots were there.

Change can be a really good thing - but this Flames organization needs to start learning from their past mistakes. They absolutely have not done this in the last decade (...could probably argue more than that but it was a different era).

The Flames organization needs to change.

In the end I wish all the best to Johnny for the reasons you mentioned. We only get to do this all once, go be with your family dude. Play hockey for your favourite childhood team - what an awesome story.

...but the Flames? I just need to reiterate it. They need to change the way they do things.

The biggest shame is Sutter only getting one full season with this core. The Peters/Ward era was a complete waste. I blame Treliving for Peters, but I think his hands were tied with Ward. I don't think the owners wanted to pay up for a coach during the pandemic.

I'm not opposed to a GM change, but I'm not interested in some unproven type without experience repeating a bunch of the same mistakes we've seen Treliving make in the early stages of his career.
Exactly. Given that there were reports of Murray Edwards personally presenting Johnny with an offer, chances are Treliving didn't have the authority to trade Gaudreau even if he wanted to.

Hell, he was asked about trying to trade his rights and said something along the lines of "That wasn't an option".

Do you believe Treliving thought Johnny was leaving after seeing the way he looked and sounded at the press conference? And all the rumors about offers and counters that happened in the last few days?

I'm confident that someone would have blamed that trade for Johnny leaving.

The only thing I can tell myself to not feel completely depressed by this is that nobody is getting passed Colorado for the next few years in the west. Might as well rebuild and tank in a time period when it's going to be exceedingly hard for anyone from the west other than Colorado.

When you some people saying one thing and others saying a different thing, that's actually not a narrative at all, it's multiple narratives.

at least there's some money to find someone skilled and tougher to play against in the playoffs, need someone with chemistry to play with chuck. Or is he gone too, now ?

well it's Brad's job to get value for his players, whether in contract or through trade.

He's not getting that kind of offer for Tkachuk again.

I would have had a lot more respect for Gaudreau if he would have been more forthright with his intentions to leave. Now I have no well wishes for him.
How do you know he wanted to leave the entire time? There wasn’t anything leading up that would’ve indicated he was gone, especially that post season presser where it sounded like he was coming back. Heck, it even changed Eric Francis’ mind and he was adamant Johnny was gone years ago.

Personally, I think Gaudreau wanted to come back. He loves it here. He loves the team and the fans. But he’s married to a Philly girl and she’s pregnant. He’s also very close to his family. He’s probably been chilling at home and all month thinking, why don’t I just stay?

That’s why the team needed to sign him before he hit the market, the allure of home was coming home was going to be strong and the team couldn’t allow him that chance.

I believe him when he said last year that he was open to coming back, management just couldn’t pull the trigger. Maybe it was money, maybe they needed to see Johnny do it in the playoffs first, whatever it was, they didn’t get the job done and now the team has got no assets and barely any success during Johnny’s tenure.

It's a multi-hour commute from the Hamptons to Manhattan now. People are actually having bladder surgery so they can make the trip without stopping to pee. (Google ‘Hamptons bladder’.)

Seems to me that makes it a significantly less desirable option.
