A 100+ point winger? Maybe Malkin? He can play wing but he's getting a little long in the tooth too.
The fact of the matter is that a good chunk of this core is ageing out. That is a simple but harsh reality.

Don’t care who they sign, this team is going to be bad. Johnny was the straw that stirred the drink offensively and his defensive play under Sutter was much improved.
Terrible news and worse timing.

Because he wants to live in the eastern US.
His best chance of winning a cup in his career is likely going to NJ.

I kind of hope Tkachuk wants out now and that hopefully we can get a nice return for him.
I don't he'll ever duplicate that season again and that we'd be hopefully selling high.
If that scenario plays out I guess the silver lining is we won't be building the team around a pair of wingers wo eat up $20-22 million cap for the next 8 years...

Tie games in third period of games 2, 4 and 5 vs Edmonton is “barely competitive”. Interesting.
Beating Colorado in Colorado and losing a one goal game is “barely competitive”.
Tough crowd.

So Francis, was essentially wrong twice. He’s not an insider, he knows nothing.

We're going to definitely need to start looking closer at building a team of players that are interested in being here for the long term; ones that see a vision for success, see the value in building a team as a whole (the Crosby discount), and have roots in this area if possible (similar to what happened today). Above all, we need a respected and revered organization that puts 100% into what the team, the players and the fan experience.
Then can we get to a point where star players are leaving American and eastern teams to 'come home' to play here. Even as a small market, I don't think it's impossible with the right vision and commitment to a plan.

If the Flames weren’t looking super secure for the playoffs I think it would have been an ink or trade scenario at TDL. Maybe they’d still end up keeping him as their own ‘rental’, but they probably wouldn’t have deluded themselves into to ight’s disappointment
I bet a big part of the off season calculus was that in a contract year he’d be likely to up his value.

That this team needs to be more realistic about who wants to be here and who doesn't and more or less be pretty clear - if you want to be here, sign a contract in advance. If you don't? Be honest with the fans, and trade the player because they have to manage the asset.
Protect the Calgary Flames above all else.

Can't argue with that. Gaudreau eventually leaving always seemed like it was probable. His mom cried when he was drafted by Calgary because it was too far from home. It was hard to convince him to sign out of college (again, mom pushing him to stay in college). His follow-up contract was a difficult negotiation. His family liked to visit, but it almost always came with comments about how far it was for them and how nice it would be if Calgary wasn't so far to travel.
You just knew that eventually he would want to move closer to home. His wife becoming impregnated probably helped that decision too.

We lost in 5 game to the Oilers. Who lost in 4 games to the Avs. That's really all there is to know, the Flames weren't close to cup contention with gaudrea at 6 and they sure as hell wouldn't be with him at 11 or whatever people wanted to pay him.
Isn't the "close sweep" canard something we all make fun of oilers fans for? The flames have never won more than 5 playoff games with this core iteration, the record speaks for itself.
