Yup, those are good contracts all right. As a player, I'd be over the moon to be on a team that handed out contracts like that.
Oh, wait. You meant good for the team?

Not a good look. easily will get the Tavares treatment from fans. Dirtbag move on his part entirely by not being forthright in his decision. One of the scummiest moves I’ve seen anyone pull.

How can Johnny evaluate NJD with less money VS CGY with more money if he doesn't know what the difference in money is?
The flames didnt put forth their best offer until today...

If Tkachuk can't get done he will fetch a very good return that can help plug other holes, a true #1 D would be nice. We have Pelletier developing nicely and some other very good young pieces on the way. How many of you lived through the Young Gun era? This is not nearly that bad! It will be interesting to see what Tree does tmrw but I don't think this team takes a big step backwards at all. We move on,

I just don't know about the Tkachuk return. I'm sure Treliving fielded offers for Gaudreau over the years but I feel teams like the Flyers always had it in the back of their minds they could just wait for this day to come and were never truly aggressive as they could have been. I feel a team like the Blues will also feel this way that they can just wait a year and get Matthew without unloading assets.

There is no rebuild coming with Sutter having unfinished business here, for a couple years.
Have dough for a couple good players in the short term, plus whatever else Trelvling can muster up.

They'll have you believe the money doesn't matter but at the same time if that's the case then why did he string the Flames along?

Apparently you haven't noticed that, if you are using them as an example of how to handle the salary cap.

I'm not saying the Oilers are the model to follow.
Simply that they have been able to retain their stars, the vast vast majority at team friendly, long contracts.
The embarrassing part is even with that, they haven't been able to win.

Islanders fans were wrong to vilify Tavares and Flames fans would be wrong to vilify Gaudreau.
It’s a tough, life altering decision. He’s probably still questioning if he’s making the right choice.
He was choosing between his legacy and loyalty to his Flames family and being closer to his blood family and wife.
If that choice takes him every minute then that’s what it is. Sucks that it strung the team along but really I’m not sure what more the flames could have done had they known a week earlier anyways.

The money matters. Maybe he wanted $2m more per season to play in Calgary instead of NJ and the flames only offered $0.5m per season.
Who knows?

Yes, but Tkachuk has no say and I’m sure there will be quite a few teams in on him.

I’m not confident there’s a GM in the league who wouldn’t be lame duck with this ownership group.
Maybe, just maybe we get the team’s hand forced with Tkachuk angling for UFA and the team has no choice but to do what it ought to do, which is rebuild.

You’re an idiot if you think The Flames should rebuild because of this. The team is still a good one with what they have and Sutter as coach.

Agree - if you move Tkachuk the best return might not be the Blues.
It might be a team that wants to get him there to try to convince him to stay prior to UFA.
