He didn't decide this today, he knew the entire time. I take issue with selfish people, what can I say.

Aren't we all selfish?
He's starting a family and wants to be close to home (at least that's what they say).
I'm sure he weighed loyalty vs family. Not an easy decision to make

Tre better not be bidding for Kane. I'll stop watching if we sign a player of that character.
Tre's got cap flexibility, some good players, and a great coach. He should look at next season as an opportunity - there's no need to panic this off-season. Go talk to Darryl, get a plan for what you want to accomplish, get some buy-in from Darryl for tolerating younger players, and give us a team that works hard.

Well, well, well....
It's going to be interesting seeing what direction this team goes now.
If the rumor was true about other players wanting out if Johnny left, then let's just tear this sucker down and rebuild. 2023 draft is supposed to be strong.
Doubt they do that though, they'll probably spend the money that was earmarked for Johnny and Tkachuk on lesser players now.

Sure didn't to me.
All the talk about patience and no knee jerk actions is worrisome. The Treliving I knew chews bubble gum, comes out and says we've been ready for any and all situations and we do our work and get it done.
Instead we got....that.
Fire tree. It's a vote of no confidence.
And to be clear here. I'm fine with Johnny leaving, knew for a lo g time the family home thing had way more weight than other were willing to admit. I'm fine the Flames focused on Johnny to try and get it done.
But, not sounding like you weren't prepared for a highly probable outcome? Nope. Thats not what Wizards do.
Instead of Gandalf, we got Radagast.
|
Yeah, one press conference, that's why he should be fired...
Sure the resume is written in crayon, but he exudes confidence!

Lindholm is clearly more valuable than Tkachuk. $4.xx million for 2 years, for the type of player he is?

Yup - as long as the STL deal includes their first.

Agreed. Zero issue the way it was handled from the Flames side.
Likely an overpay and giving him the ability to set the guidelines for negotiation a year ago. A courtesy the organization didn’t have to extended, but did, along with everything else done to make the team better and treat your top player with respect…same as not trading his rights for a 5th round pick or something frivolous in the past 2 days…for all the time and energy the Flames spent for seemingly nothing, but handled it with class and that will be noticed by other players in and outside of the organization in the future.

This team with Gaudreau had a tough time winning, and generating offense in the playoffs. I don’t think that would’ve changed with an $11M Gaudreau signed. Would we all have been as eager to bring the band back if we lost to Dallas in game 7? I’m not too certain. However, this is an opportunity for this team to choose a new direction, and perhaps even a winning one.
|
I’m both not terribly disappointed by the news (as I see the silver linings) but also feel screwed by Jonny and completely letdown by Tre.
Selfish player and an incompetent overconfident GM.
The opportunity is there for this team to still be good but i don’t like the chances with BT at the helm.

That was the largest AAV (+$2M) and contract in the league (+$16M) by a lot when it was signed.
It’s still good value for the Oilers but let’s not act like it was a discount.
The mistake was he took 8 years when he should have taken 5 but that’s his agents fault IMO because his agent probably wanted the $100M and the big commission.

No way I’d be rebuilding. Still lots of good pieces at the right ages to work with.

Yup, those are good contracts all right. As a player, I'd be over the moon to be on a team that handed out contracts like that.
Oh, wait. You meant good for the team?

I think they do have a contingency in place, but its probably signing Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Kylington long-term and then keeping Lucic/Monahan for their last season and bringing in a couple players from the farm.
There probably isn't a lot of room to go UFA shopping this year.

The contingency plan would have been to trade him before the NTC kicked in. Tre would have been eviscerated if he did that.
I really don't know what else he could have done. If the Flames offered Johnny a max contract and he says no, that's not on the GM.
Tkachuk needs to be dealt, preferably to a lottery team so that the Flames have two shots at Bedard.

Thought this was coming when he didn’t take the extra year on his last contract… not surprised but it sucks! This is the dark timeline… darkest is if he signs with the oilers… if they go rebuild I want a team full of big nasty goons while they stockpile high picks… if your gonna suck it would be at least entertaining!
