I’m actually not too disappointed by those news. Gaudreau is a great player, and I wish him well. However this will be an opportunity for the rest of the guys to step up offensively without using John as a crutch.
This team with Gaudreau had a tough time winning, and generating offense in the playoffs. I don’t think that would’ve changed with an $11M Gaudreau signed. Would we all have been as eager to bring the band back if we lost to Dallas in game 7? I’m not too certain. However, this is an opportunity for this team to choose a new direction, and perhaps even a winning one.

We should absolutely be shopping Markstrom.

Not really about losing Gaudreau. I'm not really a big Gaudreau fan (though he won me over a little bit with good two way play last year), and I wasn't super excited about potentially giving him 11 mil/yr either.
If he wanted to walk I have no issue with that, but he and his team made it appear that they were negotiating when they weren't and it completely screws this team.
He didn't decide this today, he knew the entire time. I take issue with selfish people, what can I say.

Well that sucks. In the end I think he’s leaving money on the table to go home…so power to him but wish he would have come to that conclusion sooner.
I don’t really blame Treliving because I think the two Covid impacted seasons and his performance in those seasons would have led to a really disappointing trade return last offseason.
And then it’s not like they could move him at the deadline with the season they were having.
I do truly hope the Flames look hard a rebuild here though. There are some pieces we could move for pretty good value and kickstart a new era.

I'm glad I never did buy his jersey.
I get the family decision. I just don't like dragging it out hours before the deadline. It feels like he used the Flames the way Kawhi Leonard did the Raptors.

This one didn’t work out, but I have zero issue with how this was handled. No trade for Johnny that we could have had prior to NTC imo would have been good enough. You can’t replace a player like Johnny easily. I for one am glad our GM did what he could to try and keep him, including some of the moves made this year to show we’d invest in being a contender. Happy our GM didn’t assume defeat and rolled the dice on being able to keep him given where Johnny is in his career. Sucks it didn’t work out, but I’m happy they went all in on him.

This.
He didn’t sell low last offseason just because and it almost paid off.

That's not what people were criticized for. People were criticized for the false notion that this is a dilemma that could have been realistically, satisfactorily avoided a year ago. And people are criticized for thinking that the whole team is utter garbage without Gaudreau. Both of these common narratives are nonsense.

Yeah - I hear what you’re saying, and it’s why I said I’m not sure if his disappointed tone comes from Johnny leaving or that deep down he knows he’s getting fired.
If the Flames do nothing tomorrow, I think it’s an indication Treliving will be shown the door.

Exactly, we don't need to hear for the millionth time how the Oilers are the best thing since sliced bread.
Oilers will also likely lose McJesus one day.

Totally agree, just peeved we didn't know Gaudreau's plan a week earlier to start the process a year sooner at the draft.

If I am Darryl I'm pissed. The GM should start looking for work elsewhere. He knew this would happen the entire year and did jack.

The Oilers somehow convinced McDavid to take a discount on his contract out of his ELC for 8 years.
The Oilers continually find good contracts for their stars.
(except for Nurse).
