If he knows he's going to sign with NYJ, offer them access to an 8th year. He gets more money, they get lower cap hit, and Flames get something...anything...even a 5th or something

I don’t think a team could offer him 8 years if the flames traded his rights. Only the flames have that ability.

I don't believe this either. If the Flames are already up to and over that number then he would have already told them no. My thoughts are that this is going right to the wire in any foreseeable outcome. The higher the number he gets the Flames to go to tonight dictates how tomorrow goes. Keeping the Flames in negotiations sets a floor on where the 7-year deal goes tomorrow because he can always sign a 7-year deal with the Flames tomorrow. I think the Flames are being used to drive up the number that the Flyers/Devils/Islanders will eventually have to pay.

The only way anyone other than the flames can get an 8th year is if it's a sign and trade. The player has to be on your roster prior to the trade deadline to be able to offer an 8 year contract.

As much as I don’t trust the rumour since it’s from some random guy, it kind of makes sense that he wants to go back east. Hope I’m wrong but you got to think a deal would be done already if he was staying in Calgary. Hope I’m wrong but time is ticking and it’s not looking overly promising.

We have had the odd rando on CP break news accurately before too. Sometimes it's the randos who hear things precisely because they're randos like friends of player family etc. and not press. Dubious without confirmed sources though.
