Stressed as a fan, just imagine how the two camps feel.

JG is going to get paid either way but BT has played a very risky game here. And what happens if Gross tells JG to wait until FA only to have the best offers at or below what the Flames offered, but without the extra year? Big fail if that happens!

Good point.

Let the franchise players walk so we have cap space to sign the Neal’s, Brouwer’s, and Kadri’s of the NHL

Why? Is that the latest request from Johnny? I have two in my fridge right now I can donate to the cause.

As for another poster offering music lessons? Have you heard him sing, stick with hockey Johnny.

Totally not putting you on the spot or trying to rub anything in but regular season is one part of the equation. Playoffs is another kettle of fish. I just look at what he’s likely to do in the future and I personally see 85 point seasons. I don’t think that’s worth the $11M.

Haha tell yourself whatever you want, but losing one of the top players in the NHL would be a colossally terrible outcome for a team that finally found itself after a number of pretty bad years.

Should the team pay him 11.5 x 8 to keep him? Probably not, it will mean other very difficult decisions need to be made. Losing him for nothing sets off a chain reaction that slams the team's competitive window shut if you ask me.

I, too, hope we lose the most exciting player this team has had in 10 years for nothing, rather than pay him $1,000,000 too much for the next eight years, when the salary cap is set to rise.

The question is what you believe he is going forward. For that when someone is in a contract year I’m generally skeptical. He’s been about a ppg player and I don’t think that’s worth $11M. And so I think with that as your top line expense it will cost you when he produces in the 85-90 point mark for the next 4-5 years. So if you do want to go to rebuild and want to hand off that contract, it’ll be tough to not pay to get rid of it when he’s a ppg player.
If JG regresses we're toast anyways. We have nothing resembling a high impact player coming through the minors and traded all our picks.

I just don't see us in a salary crunch in future years because of an extra 1/5 million here.

So Sign him and he regresses - We're toast anyways. Not an issue. You trade and take a bad contract back and rebuild

Let him leave - We're toast IMO. Should tear it down

Sign him - You still have a lot to figure out but at least you have 1 of the 2 super stars you need to compete (And maybe MT stays and big Maybe, he gets better, he is only 24 and becomes the true 1B)

You are literally incapable of not using feeling based arguments. If you want to look at stats bring out actual stats, stop pulling out your pud and plastering us all with your "thoughts" and "personally see" and "feelings". No one cares.

It sucks but sunk cost. My view at least.

He was over a ppg in the playoffs and they got there largely because of his 115 points

Should I post his ppg from years past? I don’t know why you’re getting so aggravated. Move along.

Anyone else find it exciting? Johnny’s signing or leaving dramatically alters the fate of the franchise. Both outcomes lead to intriguing options. Put me in the excited camp to turn the page with more certainty to the direction of the franchise, albeit in completely different directions.

Sure, but what's the alternative? Now you get to keep a bunch of support players long term and overpay a UFA like Kadri instead?
