So furry Murray made the last offer for the Flames, directly to Gaudreau.

Johnny's wife called up Murray's wife for this one. Get the decision makers in the room.

Doesn't it have to be done by 10:00 pm mountain time today?

Or rather, if there is, it is basically negligible. It seems entirely plausible to me that if Gaudreau's number for other teams is $11.0 m, then it maybe would be $10.7 m for the Flames. In the end, these things never amount to much.
Could be right but I do point to Crosby. He could be an exception but I do look to him as a favourable one. Then you have some other outliers later in their career who take discounts but you very well may be right all in all. I don’t think he’s worth much north of $9.5 but that’s another conversation. I’ll be very disappointed if he gets more than $10.25M as that will have severe downstream implications on the rest of the roster.

8x9.5 wasn't a garbage offer when you consider what that AAV looks like at 7 years on the UFA market. And he just keeps beating this drum.

If he was, it would be signed and delivered by now. So either Tre did not pick up any indicators they’d be pushing for the max, or Gaudreau’s agent has changed course. As much as I want to blame Treliving, I’m inclined agents are more likely to change course. Hard to blame Treliving if that’s the case, though he should have also seen this dragging out from time. It’s definitely not the best situation to be but I’m confident they have plan A-D outlined for different scenarios.
Disagree. No -player "should" take a discount. Gaudreau is doing exactly as he should be, looking out for himself.
It's a business, and a player needs to look after themselves first. You can't trust a pro sports team to have any sort of loyalty or do the right thing with a discount on a contract.

If a player does give a discount, there is no guarantee that savings would improve the club. They might just as easily waste it on a Neal.

Yes, it's the same team that disappointed so bloody much in Round 2, but does that automatically mean it's bound to happen again? Why can't the ceiling be higher? Why can't they learn things from what they did wrong?

If 13/19/88 are back, the makeup of the bottom six will be different next year, but different isn't bad. Different can surprise, different can be good. Different could mean a higher ceiling for the overall team and could push them to the next step.
It's not just this year though. It's the whole 8 years. We can stay a decent team for a while with Johnny on the team but I hope everyone is prepared for more of the same. If you are, great, you probably want Johnny back, not going to argue with you if think making the playoffs every other year with a star player the city loves is a half decent result. I believe ownership feels exactly that way actually, better business for them to stick with a half decent team with a beloved star that is just good enough to sometimes compete for playoff spots...and it's obviously their m.o. hello 2006-2013. That's a fair viewpoint. We're not getting anywhere close to Stanley Cup though.

John, I'll throw in some free music lessons if you sign in Calgary. You'll have to come to Brooks, Alberta for them though.

The point is that percentages are silly.

You forgot Barkov.
Barkov had two PPG seasons and one season where he missed by one point before he signed his offer. Johnny has had 3 PPG seasons and one where he missed by a point. Barkov’s best season was 1.17 PPG before he signed, Johnny’s was 1.4 PPG (Barkov’s best season at a 84% clip of Johnny’s best season). So 10 would likely still be low based on PPG. It is almost impossible to find a comparable that makes 9.5 seem like a serious offer, based on Gaudreau’s year he had.
