This is factually incorrect. Regehr was traded just before the start of free agency (to make room for the failed Brad Richards bid), which is like 6 months after christmas!

Would have been a lot better if Johnny and the team had just agreed on an arbitrary deadline for the decision that was a month earlier. Today is also an arbitrary deadline, but the Flames have a lot fewer options now.

Plus, losing Johnny is not going to be on Treliving. And drafting Bennett? First, I'm not sure how much Treliving got to be in on that draft having just come from another org sometimes there are restrictions. In any event, Bennett was the consensus pick, and in fact some figured it was a steal. You wanted Dal Colle or Haydn Fleury instead?
Yeah, you're gonna have to elaborate on that one.

This is a colossal asset management blunder. He gambled and lost.

I don't want to get into the fight, but this is pretty much it. You can't take what players say at face value. They almost always ply the franchise, city, and fanbase with platitudes no matter what their intentions actually are.

The truth is, I am sure everything Gaudreau said was honest and from the heart. He loves the city and appreciates everything, and he would probably love to continue in Calgary. That does not mean that he also does not have other priorities that could conflict with him staying.

Honestly, if you read between the lines even when he was saying "all the right things", there was always a hint that he might not be back. He focused a lot on the how much he enjoyed his time and that he hopes no matter what happens, that will be remember fondly.

He doesn't owe anything to anyone. He earned the opportunity he has and if he takes it, then I wish him nothing but the best and thank him for everything. Yes, it sucks as a fan but that's the life of a fan. Every team has to deal with these things, some more than others, but you can't take it personally.

I don't think it will be $12M stupid, no. I think Johnny will end up between 7-11M "poorer".

Snow was a moron. They were on the very outside playoff bubble. Without ink on paper it was lunacy to not trade him.

Knell is correct since he said “on”. If he’d said “in” rather than “on” then nail would be correct. Apologies for being a grammar nazi.

You don't know what was offered last year (it had to be last year prior to the powerful NTC kicking in). I suspect it was a decent offer - but based on Gaudreau's last 3 seasons. And Gaudreau rejected it to see what he could do to improve his numbers this year. What should Treliving had done - imagine a 110 point season in his head? He can't force Johnny to sign a contract. He could have traded him I suppose, but how much would he have gotten after two sub PPG seasons? You'd have called for his head if he did that.

As for this year, I can virtually guarantee they've made the highest total dollar offer to Gaudreau to stay here now.

As an American living in Canada I feel my next opinion is qualified. If i had to choose between raising children in the US vs Canada I choose Canada 100% of the time. Theres a lot of reasons but #1 is there is a chance to be caught in a mass shooting every time you leave your house there. And I
love guns and shooting them. I grew up around them. I spent lots of time shooting targets. But now, it seems like every day there’s another mass shooting in the states. No thanks
Surprised the gun problems in the US has not been talked about more as a consideration.

This was about a joke that was on the site a few days back.

The problem is Johnny wouldn't have nearly as much clarity on competing offers back then (which isn't to say he has total clarity even now).

It may have been smarter for the Flames, but I doubt it would have lead to a deal

I don't see Gross agreeing to that.

Sad really. Its because they are so frequent its common place. Usually “rich” people arent as affected but the fact is that it is a real threat every time you go out in the states.

If Johnny walks this is on Tre. This should have been done one way or another much sooner. Now he will get to handle Tkachuk too. Better step up his game.

Something imposed from Treliving's side could have been done. Treliving could have said the team would negotiate up to that point in time and do everything to sign him, but if he didn't reach a decision by then the team would move forward on the assumption he wasn't signing and would start shopping his rights and making other signings, committing that money elsewhere.
