Why do that though? Anything Flyers will pay today, they will also pay tomorrow. The 8 year AAV lowering bit is not JG's problem. If his legal team thinks there will be a bidding war, it's in his interests to wait.

The 8th year might get you more of a return. If Johnny isn't going to sign, try and get something somehow.

Teams don’t need to clear space right away. But the risk with going over temporarily is you give yourself absolutely no leverage. Other teams will know you’re desperate to dump cap and make you pay dearly to do it.
Fletcher is a truly awful GM and needs to make a splash to try and save his job. Johnny loves Philly. So it’s possible he’ll wind up there. The sad thing is even if he does the Flyers will still suck because their D is awful and Fletcher has already frittered away a bunch of their picks and prospects.

Except he makes a bunch of extra money on an 8 year deal.

They are rumored to be offering an asset.
Most likely a third round pick.
JVR is still a capable player with one year left so I doubt it goes for a first.
Best case is JVR a second and a third for the rights to Gaudreau.
Second for JVR contract and third for the eighth year and cap space help to sign Gaudreau.

Teams can only go over the cap by 10% in the offseason, so up to a point, they do need to clear space. The rest of what you say is quite true.

I hear you. I just don't think there is enough time left for it to be worth someone's pick. And, this close to FA I can't see why JG would deprive himself of that potential windfall.
He bet on himself at the start of the season and is probably going to be at least $20-25M richer as a result. He should bet on himself to be subject of a bidding war.
This might be a first big after C19 crazy contract. Maybe the bidding war goes way past $11M.
And Flyers might only be interested in selling seats and sweaters for a year to two. They might not care if they are terrible. Then they get Bedard or something crazy like that.

If Philly is actually will to give up their 1st for somebody to take on JVR, absolutely do a sign and trade with them and be done.

Yup, JVR + 1st for a signed Gaudreau. I am afraid the Flames will end up with some gross contracts if they don't fill that capspace lol

Nothing will infuriate me more than this. Burakowsky and Kadri with term, just kicks the can of mediocrity down the road.

The team acquiring would use year 8 to bring the avg down. They won't be offering the 7 year annual rate over 8 years, would they? Maybe they would, but I doubt it.
More likely, the acquiring team offers close to what the Flames are offering otherwise why would they bother giving up an asset? So that's probably not more money JG after all.
If the FA bidding gets stupid (it always seems to) he could make more on a 7 year and get his money sooner. If I was his agent at this point I would tell him to wait and see what tomorrow brings. Likely CGY, NJD and PHI all bidding.
I'm just trying to balance why all three parties (Flames, JG, Destination Team) would want to do this 'trade for rights thing' even if they could.

No, they'd be using Calgary's deal to lower the AAV. And unless Gaudreau gets something like 12 million x 7 years, it's pretty much impossible for him to make more overall money.

JVR has scored 24 goal pace the last 3 years (and much higher for all 7 years before that).
Due $4M in salary for 7AAV. Other GMs must see how wacky Fletcher's moves have been, but a sweetener shouldn't really be necessary here.

A sweetener shouldn't be added to take on $7 million AAV for a 33 year old who scores at less than 0.5 points per game?

That is the one thing that I think would be frustrating if Gaudreau does end up in Philly and the Flames don't take advantage of the Flyers cap situation.
Really I would much prefer the Flames be the team to take one of Provorov, Konecny, or JVR+1st in that scenario as part of a sign and trade.

Yeah, if Philly needs to clear money and Johnny indicates he won't re-sign... may as well snag an asset or 2.

He isn't paid to get points, he's paid to score goals, which he does very consistently, even as a 32 and 31 year old.
He could be a cheap gamble for a DET/BUF/ANA/etc. - pay a 4th now to likely get a 2nd+ at the deadline. But I can see why they'd want to explore UFA's first.

Pay a 4th for JVR?

If Philly could trade him for a punch in the face, they would.

Is it too early to establish whether or not we boo Johnny when he returns to the Dome with his new team?
