Could be.

Treliving did publicly comment that he believed both sides were interested in getting a deal done. Who knows, maybe he said that to show the Gaudreau camp how the organization is always looking out for them. Or maybe he 100% believes it.

True. But his family and friends each have their own lives, ties, responsibilities, etc. And those are overwhelmingly out East.

I think the Flames' best shot now is if Johnny's anxiety about the decision gets the best of him, and he opts for the security of an 8 year deal with the devil he knows rather than opening himself up to the uncertainty the free market. As others have noted, he can always request a trade further down the line, effectively postponing what is clearly a big decision for him.

I wondered about that the other day. I think most leaks are from agents.

I always thought leaks came from improperly fitted pipes

He has no choice but to believe he can get it done until he signs a contract in Calgary or else where.

I wonder if Gross tells Tre here soon that Johnny is going to free agency, and if he does I wonder if they discuss the possibility of a sign and trade so he can get the 8th year with his preferred team (the Flyers).

Tre has said repeatedly that they will only focus on getting him re-signed until their told otherwise by Johnny's camp.

To me it sounds like the Flames have leaked how much they’re offering in an attempt to show the fanbase that “hey we did our best” as if this was some sort of unavoidable reality.

…I hope I’m wrong, but if he leaves there are no excuses for management. They took this risk, and sometimes risks don’t pay off. This one may not, and there should be no excuses.

I was wondering about this potential too and hope the Flames are or have been on the horn with a few teams to explore this option too.

Would be weird to wait until right before the bidding war just to do that.

It helps us, sure.

Only works if JG is positive he is not coming back and is willing to accept less to go to a preferred destination. Once the team knows they are his preferred spot he loses some negotiating power.

I still think Johnny will sign and I always thought it would go down to the wire. Maybe some will call me overly optimistic despite some solid inside info from folks above, but I just believe he would have told Flames he was leaving by now and it would have leaked.

Tell them we are doing a sign and trade with the 8th then do the sign part and conveniently forget the trade part. That's a solid plan!

Rarely happens, almost no need to do it unless Johnny covets the extra year/potentially giving Philly a bit of cap space extended over an extra year.

Probably just goes into tomorrow more than anything if he doesn't sign.
Either way, this #### is tough to watch unfold.

You’d be paying for what, a half day of negotiation time? How would you even value that?

Maybe a pick for an extra week. Can’t see paying much for half a day though.

What could they have done though? If they offered Gaudreau an 8x10.5 contract last offseason people would have flipped out.

I would be annoyed if they missed out on trading Tkachuk for 2nd overall if that is how it goes down though.

You are paying for a significantly lower AAV than a 7 year deal in a UFA bidding war.

It's the right move if Gaudreau leaves.

It's actually the best of both worlds for him: the biggest total contract because of 8 years plus playing in his preferred destination.

Guaranteed Gaudreau already knows Philly's offer. Would be buying cap space over his contract.

It was the right move when the Devils were shopping the second overall. If he gets traded now it is going to be for some crappy spare parts from St Louis probably.

I would be more excited for a rebuild if JG leaves then a patch work attempt.

Get max value to Lindholm, Hanifin, MT, and Markstrum and you can turn this around quick with a little luck.
