Gaudreau IS the least risky option.

Of course the issue with that line of thinking, is that we have the wrong guy in charge. If you can't trust that Treliving is going to manage that properly, you need someone else at the wheel.

Hindsight is 20/20, but if only the Flames hired a competent coach instead of Richarding around all those years with the Gulutzens and Peters hirings. Such a waste of Johnny's prime years.

Johnny brings in bucks...lotsa bucks. So one needs to look at the opportunity cost of NOT signing him...potential flagging interest in the Flames, same for an arena, loss of seatholders and sponsorships, fewer jersey sales.

OTOH, an $11M AAV contract can become a millstone, unless you plan on simply playing in the back half with a $5M smaller cap (essentially), or eating salary on a trade - which comes to much the same thing.

As a fan, I don't care what the Flames spend...I like watching him, he's exciting, has a bunch of great moves, brings speed and finesse to the team's game...and increases their chance of a Cup.

I care how the Flames spend a finite amount of money and if it gives them a chance to succeed.

And, star cup winners also get endorsement deals. I wonder how much money Crosby made as a result of those two extra cup wins. We'll never know how much total was left on the table or made up for between his contract and the endorsements he did get after the cups compared to what he could have had in salary and endorsements without the cup, but fair to assume winning those extra cups brought some more money in to soften the blow of his sacrifice on salary.

I don't think Treliving is dumb, but if the Flames lose Gaudreau and try to replace him (individually or in aggregate) tomorrow, it's likely dictated by his boss.

The cap is rumoured to go up in the next few years as well, so the Flames may get some much needed cap relief when they have to re-sign Lindholm and co. Lucic's contract will also be off the books after next year so that will certainly help them moving forward.

I think the Flames' window for contention is still open for at least the next 3-4 years, IF they re-sign Gaudreau.
