Can't believe some of you would let one of the top 5 players in the league walk for nothing, over a million bucks per year.
There are some players it's worth it to the team to have a slight overpay for, and I think Gaudreau is one of them.
Tell me how you could spend the 11M and have a team just as good and just as entertaining to watch. You probably can't do it.
|
Top 5 is a tiny stretch: McDavid, Matthews, Makar, Mackinnon, Kucherov, for starters, are better. And you can make a case for a few more.
But I think the counterpoint is you can avoid the crushing contracts he and Tkachuk are going to impose and rebuild through a tank if you are prepared for the 3 years of poor results.

yeah that makes no sense. With Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Kylington all needing deals, there was no way they could bring back Zadorov or Gudbranson.

And I suspect that they will not be day one signings (at least not Gud) so the Flames will have a shot at at least one anyway.

Same here, Zads will be just too expensive but I think we can keep Gudbranson on a 3 year deal once the dust settles. Here’s hoping Gaudreau is on the team after all that dust settling lol!

I think they can bring back one (probably Gud), but not both.

maybe. But even then, that's not something that needs to be done before UFA starts. Doubt he'll be off the market immediately.

Seravalli just now on his show: Mentions again that the latest offer in the last 24 hours is somewhere north of $10mil/yr for 8 years. Wonders if is about the money after all after the latest engagements.
I'm guessing the Flames left them with that offer last night and Gaudreau's camp will counter again today, at which point they'll make the final offer at around $11mil/year

Well no, I wouldn't let Makar or MacKinnon or Vasilevskiy or McDavid or Crosby walk over a million bucks...

Not his problem. If he was my agent I'd be glad he's thinking of me first, and not what helps the people on the other side of the negotiation table.

I'm sure at least a few teams looking to reach the cap floor will extend generous offers to them, but it's not like these guys are irreplaceable. Filling that 3D pair would be the last priority for Treliving.

IMO it's good news. In my mind, if his heart was set on leaving, there wouldn't be the need for all those negotiations, offers, counter-offers at this point.

The only way they both could come back is if Johnny doesn't sign. I mean I guess its something - but pretty tiny impact.

and I wouldn't let Gaudreau walk over a million. (plus at this point in their careers, he's better than Crosby)

This was also his performance in a contract year. Will he be this good again? Who knows? It was a standout year for him. Not as dramatic as Kadri's outlier year, but a substantial outlier nonetheless. He could be back below a PPG and have a negative +/- again next year, and be that way for the next 8 years while getting paid $11M and having a weaker roster around him because his contract is sucking up the cap money.

There are often bargains to be had when players find themselves without a contract for a few days after UFA. They start worrying that they will end up in Europe.

If Johnny inks the extension here the flames off-season becomes quite exciting; so hoping we see that tweet here soon
