If the flames were to go for it my ideal state would be if the flames signed Gaudreau at $9.5M, Flames dumping the Lucic contract, trading Tkachuk for primarily picks and a prospect, signing Malkin for 3 x $9M. Allows them a better short term push but if it doesn’t work after a year they can deal Malkin and build through draft.

Who is their biggest RFA? Tippett?
Can't see him costing too much. Lots of time to sign him. They'll focus on UFAs first.

If your goal is to return home, why allow another team to stop you from doing that? At least that's how I look at it. If there is a dollar figure that allows him to stay, then first priority is money and if he can't get that amount of money, then he's prepared to go home.

This shouldn't be surprising, and reason is that no one knows what is happening.

And if he goes home to Philly and continues to put up numbers then he still could have a number retired after a good career there... weird take.

it's not even about their RFAs, they simply were right at the cap and needed to create some breathing room anyway. A Lindblom buyout was the easiest and most convenient way to do so, especially at 1/3 due to his age. If they want a serious run at Johnny, they'll have to get rid of JVR or give up on Konecny. If either of those things happen, we can still all panic. But the Lindblom buyout in isolation isn't a huge deal, that was probably always going to happen.

Nope.
In fact IMO a lot of teams that signed bug UFAs took a step back. Vegas was in the finals, and have been weaker since getting Stone (practically a UFA) and Pietrangelo. NYR did nothing with Panarin (it took Shesterkin to make them into a competitive team). Tavares is a good player, but would the leafs have done worse with Kadri still their 2C? Who pays a 2C 11M anyway? Laughably the biggest UFAs in 2016 were Lucic and Okposo and we know what happened. Hamilton didn't do anything with the Devils.

I mean, signing with the Flames now, doesn't preclude him for playing with Philly/NJ at some point either in the future either... say a few years down the road, and Calgary has plateaued, he can still request a trade...
I thought Iginla would be a Flame forever, but he went on an played for a number of different teams afterwards.

This is a Kawhi Leonard joke.
Toronto fans were insane when he was deciding where he was playing

Just my opinion but letting him walk, if his contract demands are too high, isn't the end of the world. Would be better than cash strapping the team and never being able to win anything as a result. Either way, Gaudreau is a great player.
|
you let him walk and you have an even better chance of never winning anything.
Can't believe some of you would let one of the top 5 players in the league walk for nothing, over a million bucks per year.
There are some players it's worth it to the team to have a slight overpay for, and I think Gaudreau is one of them.
Tell me how you could spend the 11M and have a team just as good and just as entertaining to watch. You probably can't do it.
