The watch is coming to an end... I feel Gaudreau has played his last game on the Flames.

I've been back and forth but think at this point Gaudreau waits it out to see what the FA offers are. His only "close" option in free agency in Forsberg has signed, if anyone's after winger long term he's the best available by a mile... Maybe someone really backs up the truck?

If Johnny leaves the Flames must have a fire sale and tank, it’s how elite teams like the Avs, Oilers, Lightning, Penguins got to where they are. Enough of this barely making the playoffs and getting destroyed by good teams, tank it up baby.

How many players have signed really big money contracts and then gone on to win for the first time with that team?

Of course they will. I don't see it the same though, Tavares went from an Islanders team that was bad at the time and had been for awhile to a Leafs team whose contention windows was starting to open. The Flyers are the exact opposite. He isn't winning jack there. The Devil's have stated they need to get bigger, they have plenty of small skilled players. The Islanders? They would be hard pressed to make it work cap wise as shown by the Athletic article. Even if Gaudreau takes a look at free agency the best fit will still be here. Unless it was never about being close to home and he signs with a West team but I don't think that would ever happen.

The Hall thing almost certainly wasn’t by his design

While I agree with you, doubt we see it, especially while we're "sorting out" a new arena. Mandate is likely maximizing revenue, so any "rebuild" we get into will be incredibly short... And likely shortsighted and ineffective as a result.
Hopefully the above isn't the case because we either keep our FAs or do a proper rebuild, but it's hard to have faith with the track record.

That was his BUF/BOS season.
His NJD ARI season was 16g 52p in 65gp

He may have some credibility until he just couldn't help himself and had to put Oilers in there.

What would be the logic of him signing a one year deal after his best season he’s ever had? His value is as high as it likely ever will be, now is when you sign a long term contract.

Last I checked the Oilers finished top 4, losing to the eventual cup winner…

Yeah that’s the sad reality of it, to get anywhere close to replacing Johnny the Flames will have to draft top 2-3 pretty soon. Players like him are once in a lifetime to be found in the 4th round…
