I know a few very wealthy Canadians who recently became residents of California to avoid Canadian taxes going forward.

WTF does this have to do with the NHL? Why are folks determined to make everything about politics?

A lot of this is way less impactful for pro athletes than average people. That higher gas or food bill just doesn't hit the same for the millionaire.

It all comes down to taxes. Its the single largest consideration (even more league minimum, it's a six figure difference in net income). That's what they're looking at by and large. When you're Johnny and you're comparing states, he isn't looking at the price of gas or the cost of home ownership. He's looking at the 7 figure difference in take-home pay.

It's something people do to others to make them feel like ####

No, it isn’t.

Health insurance for a family of four is not $25k in Canada.

Plus, he’s going to be making $80M off this next deal regardless - let’s not talk about cost of living like it’s something that affects him in any perceptible way.

California seems like a weird choice if you are moving for taxes.

This is a ridiculous sidebar discussion.

Cost of living is not a problem for someone who will eclipse $100M in career earnings after this next contract is done.

Johnny might not want to stay in Canada and prefers playing in his home country. Listening to a few podcasts it is more and more about the money being irrelevant and Johnny maybe just wants to play closer to home.

Lots of comparisons to the Tavares situation right down to our own Dissentowner having the exact same take. I really hope it is different but the news so far today has pretty much all the media leaning toward Johnny leaving

The wealthy live in California because it’s where the other wealthy people live, because it’s one of the most desirable locations on Earth.

California’s taxes are higher than everywhere in Canada except Quebec.

If someone announces they are moving because of tax reasons.. 99% of the time its some kind of political statement.

True. But when you factor in the exchange rate, doesn't it more or less balance out?

Lol... no kidding. Nobody moves to California for a better cost of living. The wealthy move there for lifestyle reasons. If I was a millionaire several times over, I'd probably pay the price to be there too.

My understanding is that California is quite favourable tax-wise compared to other states such as Texas, Arizona and Florida.

I live in California and most of what is said is true. We bought a single family home here last year and it's crazy expensive to live here even on 2 high income salaries but real estate definitely appreciates quickly. It's insane how much things have appreciated in the last year.

We have 2 young boys now (3 years, and 1 week old) and love the quality of life for them. It's honestly unbeatable. The weather, amount of events etc there are to do here is amazing. I lived in 3 cities in Alberta until age 25 and initially I thought I would miss it but it's been more than a decade now and it was the best decision I ever made (honestly I wish I moved a few years sooner).

Apologies to Jason if I offended with the Trump comment. That was not my intent.
