The Disassembly of the Blackhawks - Strome and Kubalik UFAs
The 'Hawks look like they will not make qualifying offers to Strome or Kubalik.
https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-bla...7.html?src=rss
Strome had a rough start to the 2021 season, because Colliton had no idea how to use the kid. But, King was able to salvage something from Strome.
Kubalik, a bit of a one note player, suffered along with linemate Toews struggles. 'Hawks should have sold high on him in 2020.

I mean, if this isn't a planned tank, I don't know what is.
Foss...I have to ask, are there rumblings about asking Kane and Toews to waive their NMCs? I have to imagine they would like to play competitive hockey still.

Watching the Hawks this past year Kane is still great but Toews is done. If he had any class, which I began to question after the Beech stuff, he would humbly retire and walk away.

The hawks are doing a tank for sure, it's the Seth Jones signing that's crazy. He should be the first to go.

This will be a great test case for the tanking crowd. Strip it right down prior to a deep draft. I am still not convinced this is a good way to go with the way the draft lottery works and luck involved in building a true Stanley Cup contender, but we'll see (in what, 3 year? 5 years?)

If they are going to tank than they would still have to meet cap floor.
It'd be a great time for teams to poke around and get some of these guys at 50% retention.
If Evander Kane sparks interest with his checkered past, Patrick has got to hold quite a bit of value at 5.25 per.

Seth Jones was traded for and extended by a different GM

To be fair, they’re not even turning these guys into assets. It’s not a sell so you can get more picks, it’s just throw away assets in the hopes of being bad.

Agreed, which makes this all the more confusing. They still need to field a roster. Even if tanking is the goal for high end players, they still need quality and quantity to be successful. I think the scorched earth approach that many seem to favour is really much more likely to result in years of wandering the desert.

Toews, in interviews, is, clearly, disaffected with the Blackhawk's current state. I would expect him to waive his NMC for a Canadian team. I would also expect that Canadian team to overpay for his "intangibles", simply because he is also a good Canadian guy.
For Kane, I haven't heard anything from him since his linemate, DeBrincat, got moved. I would expect that Kane wouldn't be moved until next trade deadline, as his apparent value to a contender would be accelerated. I think Blackhawk fans would be extremely upset if Kane is just dumped until some kind of return could be recaptured.
I don't think that maintaining the NMC would be a big deal by either guy, at this point in their contract/career.

I'm don't think the cap floor will be an issue. Especially if Keith's recapture penalty counts (I really haven't looked how that all plays out).

Tank commanders unite!
Should have been dumping these players before trade deadline last season to maximize return as part of the strategy.
Hawks should have been in on kassian and need to be in on every other contract dump going forward.

a penny for Seth Jones' thoughts ... I doubt this is what he had in mind when he signed there.
there's certainly worse times for a franchise to go nuclear than before the 2023 draft though. Even if you miss out on Bedard or Michkov, you can still land a cornerstone piece like Fantilli, Dvorsky or Benson. Ridiculously loaded class.

As far as a "tank", even retaining all this "talent" the 'Hawks were behind all the teams in the Central, with no defense and no reliable goaltending. IMO, it is not as much of a "tank" as an acceptance of reality, that the bills for prior success have come due, and this team needed a major overhaul. They were not a playoff team the last couple of years, despite desperation moves, so is it truly a "tank" if your team is already no good?

If the Scheifele rumours of him wanting out of the Jets is true, I wonder if Jets take a chance at Toews, and then trade Scheifele for a massive haul of assets.

Most blatant tank job I've ever seen. Pretty much begging Toews and Kane to ask for trades.

hard to call it something else though when you trade away DeBrincat and Dach for picks and let Strome and Kubalik walk to UFA. That's not just an admission of being bad, that's a concerted effort to be as bad as possible.

Tanking for an 18.5% shot at Bedard. Not a good plan...
