FWIW I think he's more like a 70-85 pt player without Gaudreau but WITH 1st line deployment.

Agreed. I think if Toffolli slide up with Lindholm and Tkachuk that Tkachuk probably gets 70 points. But eventually you will have an opportunity to upgrade on Toffolli and he could still get 85 to 95 points
He did get over a ppg on A line with Backlund and Frolik. He was on the first pp but he’s good enough to be on the first pp on every team in the nhl.
He’s slow sure but he’s elite in some areas of the game. In tight around the net he might be the best player in the league

How many goals did Lindholm score from his favourite spot? I bet Tkachuk set up more of those goals than Johnny

Obviously you can tweak rankings depending on how much you value pts vs goals vs durability vs all the other things, but I think these are pretty natural tiers.
* 4 years is a time frame that best flatters the Flames guys, especially considering their bad seasons are inherently weighted lower than their good years based on season length.
You could also say that the most recent year is slightly heavier weighted (without any manipulation) because goal scoring was up by about 5% over the other years
**I know everyone likes to write obituaries for guys at the first sign of injury trouble in their 30s, but these guys belong high on this list until they prove they've lost it.

Dom from the Athletic has Tkachuk as a top 10 player in the league next year based on his analytics in all 3 zones. People forget he’s only 24.
He’s becoming underrated around these parts

Sure… but the puck almost always started with Johnny, and made most of those passes to Tkachuk who one touched it out front. Are you talking about that set play they did all year?

Not everyone was off a set play and not trying to say Johnny contributed nothing to those goals. Tkachuk within 5 feet of the net is as good as anyone. Passer, screens, tips, he’s as good as it gets
For years I had buddies tell me AO wouldn’t score as many goals as he does without Backstrom. Backstrom really isn’t that good anymore yet AO still scores
Tkachuk needs a Johnny but if he has a guy get the puck from zone to zone he’s elite from the blue line down. Great along the boards great possession and maybe the best in the league around the net. Lots of guys are good in transition. Johnny is special for sure but Tkachuk is pretty good himself

Sure, all of this is fair and accurate.
Claiming Tkachuk set up more Lindholm goals than Johnny though sounds like a reach to make a point. If it’s accurate, I’d be shocked and apologize.

Not all his goals just the ones from Lindholms favourite spot

It’s crazy how underrated or appreciated he is by some of his own fan base. Maybe we were spoiled by also having Gaudreau, but Tkachuk is one of the best passers in the league, one of the best in front of the net, and one of the best pests. His shot accuracy is also really good. Given his age, losing him would be on par with losing Gaudreau.
The only thing he lack is speed, but he makes up for that by finding open areas.

Does he list the other 9 players (and therefore the dozens of great players that aren't top 10)?

He typically releases his rankings closer to the start of the season. The blurb about Tkachuk was just mentioned in his most recent RFA article.

He's not a top 10 winger let alone a top 10 player.
This is confirmation bias through and through.

Every line Tkachuk has played on since he was rookie has been high performing in all 3 zones. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out because he looks slow, but his IQ is so high and he makes tons of little plays that keep the puck out of our net and put the puck in their net.
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik was incredible.
Like you said, he’s 24. Sign him for 8 years.

I guess the point was that Dom writes for the NHL and not a particular beat, although he of course covers the big markets more. Sort of akin to Friedman, or a bargain bin Mackenzie. It will be interesting to read his rankings next month, and his reasoning.
