But if he does that I think it’s almost guarantee that Gaudreau doesn’t resign. It’s a pretty tough question but I would have done it. Cost controlled center like Wright.

The Kempe contract that was just signed today should be about as close a Mangiapane comparison as it gets.

Not me.
The chance that the #2 pick turns into Tkachuk is well under 50%. And you have to wait a few years to see if it happens. And there is a very real chance that it also convinces Gaudreau to walk.

Holtz and Wright I think would have been good enough. Or Zacha. I still think Wright is the best player in this draft. That didn't change for me as he slipped to Seattle.
I think of Wright more as 1st OHL season Wright than I do his 2nd OHL season. If the pandemic didn't interfere I don't think there'd even be a debate on this draft class. But alas, time will tell now. Just glad he didn't got to MTL in all honesty. And it's cool he went to Seattle. Thats one hell of a 1-2 punch down the middle they have there for the next decade.

If Johnny wants to leave he should have done it already, or should very, very soon at the very latest. If he ties our hands in free agency, he taints his Flames legacy. I don't want to remember him for that. As a free agent he has earned his right to go where he pleases, but the Flames deserve much, much more than this from him.

Now that we're so close to getting a resolution to some of the big off season questions, here is what I hope happens:
1. Johnny stays with the Flames. He's a star, and I think he will be very, very good for at least another 5-6 years.
2. Flames go out and land Trocheck as a UFA. Good all round player, good face off guy, can score goals, another right shot for the top 6, and would help solidify the Flames forwards down the middle. He also won't command as big of an AAV as a guy like Kadri and is also 3 years younger than Kadri.
3. Trade Tkachuk for a couple of good young players if possible. Love the player, but I don't think his skating will hold up, and I'm not a fan of paying another winger a massive 8 figure AAV, the cap space could/should be used to shore up the C and D positions. NJD as speculated would be a fantastic fit, and Mercer and/or Holtz could come in on ELC's and hopefully develop into future top 6 guys. Also both right hand shots. Their 2023 1st would also be of interest, maybe even a guy like Zacha. Bottom line is they have a lot of intriguing pieces.
4. Go after Josh Manson in free agency. Big, tough, defensively responsible, still in his prime and can fill in for Tanev until he gets back as he's capable of playing top 4.
5. Lucic dealt to clear cap space. Shouldn't be hard to do as long as a team looking to reach the cap floor happens to be on his 10 team trade list. Hopefully Anaheim is on it.
Anyways, don't know how realistic any of this is, but that's how I'd like things to go down.

Why do the Flames deserve much better? They put themselves into this position, he has done his part, not on him that the Flames allowed it to get this far.

The only way the flames would have considered the 2OA pick is if both Gaudreau and Tkachuk told the flames they weren’t not coming back.
Even if Tkachuk hit the trade market, there would likely be several teams putting forward offers, so NJ would have to beat all others.

Those of you wanting to trade chucky will be crying for a big rugged winger that stands up for his team mates and scores the moment he is gone.
If we lose JG its not the end of the world.

That’s about as thin an argument as I can recall seeing here.

Sign Gaudreau, trade tkackuk.
Imo that's the best situation. If Gaudreau would have signed they may have traded tkackuk. Tough to sign both
Edit: why is there a maple leaf logo beside my name?

Probably because you're talking about trading a top-10 winger in the league as being part of the "best solution".
That's some "we last won the Stanley Cup in 1967" management stratgey if I've ever seen it.

Opinions from the same guys that think every kid born in Ontario is coming to the Leafs because it is their "hometown". I wouldn't get too worked up about guys who never seem to have any inside information spouting their opinion, cough cough Dreger.

I agree with all except trading Tkachuk. This team really needs to keep a star even if just for optics. I personally think he is franchise player quality.
Other than that, I would propose selling high on mangiapane. I don’t think he continues to be a 35 goal guy but some team might and overpay.
Just to troll a bit but Florida seems like a place where depth players produce above their usual limits (Bennett, Duclair, Marchment, probably others). I could see them being interested is someone like Mangiapane and paying for it. Bennett for Mangiapanr anyone?

I don’t see Tkachuk standing up for his team. I see him punking the other team and then teammates have to have his back when opposing players want to shove his nose into his face. Some see that as dragging his team into battle. I see it as not fighting his own fights.
He does distract other teams and get them off their game plan. That’s the upside I see of what he brings to the table. But standing up for his teammates? Not so much.

If Gaudreau doesn’t sign, I believe this team will do everything to sign Tkachuk to a long term big contract, make him captain and build around him. I don’t think he’s the player to do that with, I also think he’s closer to a 60-70 point player without Gaudreau, but I just don’t ever see this team rebuilding.

Nit-pick, but Tkachuk probably isn't a top 10 winger:
ppg - gp - gpg over the last 4 years*
1.43 - 197 - 0.50 Nikita Kucherov
1.24 - 285 - 0.41 Patrick Kane
1.06 - 271 - 0.64 Alex Ovechkin
1.18 - 256 - 0.57 David Pastrnak
1.17 - 136 - 0.54 Kirill Kaprizov
1.21 - 286 - 0.36 Jonathan Huberdeau
1.27 - 265 - 0.37 Artemi Panarin
1.11 - 290 - 0.39 Johnny Gaudreau
1.21 - 268 - 0.36 Mitchell Marner
1.18 - 243 - 0.48 Mikko Rantanen
1.24 - 272 - 0.46 Brad Marchand**
0.97 - 234 - 0.36 Mark Stone**
0.98 - 288 - 0.50 Kyle Connor
0.99 - 287 - 0.40 Matthew Tkachuk
0.99 - 232 - 0.45 Gabriel Landeskog
1.03 - 253 - 0.49 Jake Guentzel
0.98 - 268 - 0.28 Blake Wheeler
0.98 - 128 - 0.45 Jason Robertson
0.94 - 185 - 0.40 Vladimir Tarasenko
0.91 - 235 - 0.44 Filip Forsberg
0.89 - 286 - 0.46 Alex DeBrincat
Obviously you can tweak rankings depending on how much you value pts vs goals vs durability vs all the other things, but I think these are pretty natural tiers.
* 4 years is a time frame that best flatters the Flames guys, especially considering their bad seasons are inherently weighted lower than their good years based on season length.
You could also say that the most recent year is slightly heavier weighted (without any manipulation) because goal scoring was up by about 5% over the other years
**I know everyone likes to write obituaries for guys at the first sign of injury trouble in their 30s, but these guys belong high on this list until they prove they've lost it.
