He was born two days after Martin Gelinas clinched the series in Game 6 of the 2004 conference semis, and for that reason I like the pick.

And for that reason I am feeling really old.

59: Topi Ronni, C, TAPPARA JR. (FINLAND-JR.)

May 5, 2004 | 6′ 2″ | 181 pounds

Ronni has been a good junior player the last few years in Finland and was quite productive versus men when he got called up this season. He was also a top player for Finland’s U18 team. Button sees Ronni as a middle-six centre.

“He’s really responsible positionally and we’re hoping he gains a little more confidence in making plays offensively to add that to his toolkit,” he said. “Our (Finnish scout) lives in the same city as he plays in so we feel we knew him really well.

“He played a lot with the men’s league and we saw him mostly with his national team. We like him. He has the potential to be a middle-six, 200-foot centre.”

Sounds like Mikael Backlund upside, which would be great.

I wish they would have with Calle Odelius with 2nd rnder (fell to NYI at 65th). Oh well.

Not adding too much, but Upside's E-Mac on Topi:
"Topi Ronni – Not a star by far but his size, compete, skating, defense and hockey sense give him legitimate bottom 6 potential. Getting stronger may elevate his game to a new level – could add 20-25 pounds."

Hope I'm wrong but this looks like a Brayden Point misstep all over again and maybe even worst as Goyette went to a divisional rival.

Lol it was the 59th pick...if he's like Point he should have gone #1. "Misstep" by the entire league

Still a misstep, I could care less what other teams do and who they pass on, Goyette has massive skill and skating ability, he was listed by a lot of scouts as a 1st rounder, like Point he played on a bad team but lead his team in pts by a lot.

THW had Danault as a pro comparable for Ronni. If he develops into a clone of Danault/Backlund, he'll be an incredible value pick as a second rounder.

Seeing as how Ronni played junior and pro this season, I've been interpreting it as that he's fast against peers in juniors, but not fast against seasoned pro players (yet).

And remember, fast includes PLAYING fast, which is easier for a good 18-year-old against juniors but tougher against grown men who have been playing pro for awhile. It takes awhile to learn the rhythm and timing and pacing of a pro league when you've been playing junior previously.

I've watched this kid, at the U-18s, and I can tell you that he's a good skater, especially for his size. Straight-line speed is good, as well as his edges and agility-he needs to work on his explosiveness, but he's a 7/10 in this area. If you don't believe me, go watch some video.
