Yeah, I was trying to think of the late round gems and they all north american. At a loss trying to think of a late round European player off the top of my head.

Solution must be to stop scouting in Europe.
Fire all the scouts there and double the scouting efforts in North America.

misread what you were talking about

pretty silly to assume that a player won't work out because prior draft picks from that area didn't work out, but I guess people need something to talk about

Fair to say that there's some evidence for that though. We seem to hit a lot more on the North American players than we do in Europe.

You could argue Kylington and Granlund both "worked."

Between 2008 and 2021 they've only drafted 15 guys from overseas. 9 in the first 4 rounds, 2 of those have become regular NHLers (and 4 of them were drafted in the last 3 years, so early to say yet).

2/15 is a success rate of 13.3%

Out of 75 other picks, 15 have become regular NHLers, so 20%.

So, not terribly off the mark when you consider the fact that the 20% includes 3 top 10 picks from NA. Definitely not in "fire every overseas scout" territory.

In fact (since it's with the topic and all), if you just look at the 2nd round, the Flames succeed with 67% of overseas 2nd rounders and only 22% of NA 2nd rounders since 2008, so... y'know.

I don't know if it's a good thing that this pick reminded me of song from Load era Metallica...

The thing about Kylington, and even Backs, is they were both projected top 10 picks who fell in their draft years due to injury

Kinda wish they swung for the fences and picked someone like Trikozov or Hutson with this pick and/or acquire a 3rd and snag Dumais.

I don’t find the “safe” picks usually work out for us.

David Goyette on the board and they passed. Not sure I like this pick yet. I am willing to wait and see but not looking great right now

Draft was a write off anyways. This whole offseason has been a rough start.

But I'm not gonna hold any judgement on these picks until waaaay down the road.

Don't let the entire boogeyman of an offseason get you down on some kids who's dream to be drafted just came true.

And this whole draft was a mess this year. Everything went off the rails from the onset. About the only thing that went right was Cooley at 3.
