Only the stubbornness of Gary Bettman would ever see NHL players have to use a trailer as a dressing room.

Just checked the schedule and Calgary doesn't have to go there until February. At least the Flames won't be one of the teams that has to go to the parking lot between periods!

I've asked before and never got an answer:

What can Bettman do about it? Revoke the franchise and pay Meruelo several hundred million dollars in compensation? Good luck talking the other 31 owners into that.

Basically - yes. Probably have to buy them back for like $300-350M.

And then auction the team off in a few years for $600-650M (without having to divide the pie up further like regular expansion). Houston or KC or Quebec in the interim.

With the arena deal in Calgary falling apart and the Dome on its last legs, it good to know that the league is so supportive.

The Flames will only play in outdoor rinks next season. All home games are played in January and February.

If the team can be sold for $600m on the open market, you can bet Meruelo is going to demand every penny of that. And if the league doesn't give him the money voluntarily, the lawsuits will drag on for years.

On top of which, no owner in the NHL wants a precedent that his franchise can be taken away from him simply because the league doesn't like his business plan.

But when it’s hurting the league image and revenue you’d think there would be something that could be done.

The price delta is essentially the relocation fee.

NHL owners don't want to subsidize a clown show, either.

Yes, there is something that can be done:

Suck it up.

This actually isn't the first time an NHL team has been without an arena to play in, so there are precedents. Mind you, the last time was over 90 years ago. Partway through the 1928-29 season, the Blackhawks lost their lease at the old Chicago Coliseum. They played the rest of their ‘home’ games in Detroit and in Fort Erie, Ontario. The following season they moved into the brand new Chicago Stadium.

As far as I can tell, the only way the Coyotes would be violating the terms of their franchise is if they don't build a suitable arena as soon as they reasonably can. If they have a deal in the works, they can play in whatever temporary facilities they have to while it is being built.

Now, if Tempe doesn't sign an arena deal with the Coyotes, then the league will have grounds to make the Coyotes relocate. Meanwhile, it looks like they just have to put up with the situation.

I think both the California Golden Seals and the Flyers had to use temporary rinks also. I know the roof blew off the Flyers arena one season early after the Spectrum was built.

The Tempe project is legit, they finally have an owner who is committed to putting up the cash to build an arena close to the snowbirds.

Ellman deciding to move the team to Glendale over Scottsdale is the only reason this is even a discussion.

True enough. I was specifically thinking of situations where an NHL team actually got kicked out of its arena when the lease was up, and that was the latest one I could come up with.

By the way, I've done some reading up on arena disasters as part of a side project. Did you know there were actually several new arenas whose roofs collapsed or fell apart within a few years in the 1970s?

CAD software was a pretty new thing at that time, and apparently the principal vendor coded the material stress formulas wrong. Pretty much every large building designed with that software had to have its roof rebuilt at ludicrous expense. Oops.

They will be using the Community rink locker rooms temporarily (A second arena attached to the greater arena) until the Annex is completed. Construction of a 2 store attachment is well underway.

It's amazing and quite frankly pretty bizarre how people get so deranged about this entire situation when it's TEMPORARY

How is it hurting league revenues?? This entire season is nearly sold out and the team will likely pull in more revenue this season than in Glendale..

Almost sold out with 5000? I'm not sure that's something to be happy about.

There is an issue with the first photo though Jordan. There are fans in the building.
