I'd think Looch should be an appealing piece to any team looking to hit the cap floor... wouldn't be shocked at all to see him traded for a late pick this weekend.

Here is the thing...at this point it's a bit of a game of chicken.
Flames can't up their offer too early, Gross can't show Gaudreau's hand too early.
Time and ambiguity is the leverage that Gross/Gaudreau have here. On the Flames side Treliving needs to stay patient and not bid against himself.
I honestly think if Gaudreau truly wanted to leave he would have just said so already and wouldn't string the Flames along. This is about maximizing the contract but to do that you need to use the entire period prior to free agency starting, and make it seem like you are willing to go to the open market.
If the rumor is that $9.5M is the latest offer from the Flames then Treliving is smart to not up his offer too early.
If he moves off of $9.5M now then Gross/Gaudreau can just go "Thank You, we will think about it" and just sit on whatever the next offer is until the deadline hoping the Flames panic and up the offer again. Flames are only negotiating against themselves at this point.
Gross uses the entire time period available to him as leverage. I don't think $9.5M gets it done but I don't think if they Flames put $10.5M in front of him right now he immediately signs that either.
Gross is using the UFA deadline as leverage to maximize the contract.

This will be the other move that Gross can leverage this next week.
Leak that they are leaning towards testing the market. Gaudreau want's to be closer to home. Philly and New Jersey lining up huge offers.
It could be true. It could also be a tactic to get the Flames to bump up the offer.
Anything you hear from the media, and anything that comes out of Gaudreau's camp is a negotiation tactic at this point.
Until they say to Treliving - "We aren't re-signing and are testing the market" it's all just a ploy to get more $$$.
Really there is nothing Treliving's camp will leak to media - there is no point all this point - it's clear he want's to keep Johnny and Tkachuk.
Anything that we hear from the media will be because Gaudreau's and Tkachuk's camp want the Flames org to hear it and media to talk about it.
Remember how Landeskog was gone last season, and that he had offers of $10M on the table already...then he signs in Colorado last minute for much less than that. It's all negotiating tactics.

When I joined he said he had optimism in the morning but from what his sources are saying he is less so now. He does think Johnny could be paralyzed by this choice.
Pat mentioned $11M pet and Frank said he already thinks that’s on the table.
Sorry I will have to listen again to really get it right

He thinks that it is not the money, the question is where does Johnny want to be. Thinks Johnny is paralyzed by the decision, which in a way prevents the Flames from making decisions

My take away from the Seravelli interview was that the Flames may set a deadline. I’m paraphrasing but it was along the lines of the Calgary Flames can’t be paralyzed by Gaudreau even if Gaudreau is paralyzed himself.
I think he also said that he expects a decision this weekend.

Honestly all this posturing in the media makes me more confident a deal will get done.
If he really wanted to leave he would have just said it already instead of leaving the Flames hanging.

That’s a good way to look at it. Either Johnny is legit torn or this is all Gross getting the best deal for his client

Why would he take away negotiating power by saying that?
Also that then opens up for his rights to be traded and that puts him in an awkward spot. I don’t think players like the idea of having their rights traded right before they hit the market, unless it’s to a destination they agreed too.

He doesn’t need to say anything.
He can leave and not say a word, which is the flip side to the optimistic take.
They are exactly equal, not saying anything could be good or bad we don’t know which is why this entire thread exists lol.
One could argue if he wanted to be here he would have accepted an offer by now
I think he does want to test the market just to see if PHI or NJD go crazy with an offer he can’t refuse.

If he's really dead set on leaving then he would say it - there would be no reason not to. The only reason you want to keep the negotiating power is if you are open to staying.
If he was deadset that he wanted to move to NJ or PHI to be closer to home then the best tactic for Gaudreau would be to tell Treliving that and then try to get the team to work on a sign and trade so he can get an 8 year deal.
Benefits him to get an 8 year deal, benefits the Flames if they can recoup a 2nd or something, benefits the trading team because the cap hit will probably be a bit lower.
But being ambiguous about it and acting like you're on the fence means that you likely actually are leaning towards coming back - but you need to play coy because that's how you can drive your price up. The deadline of the 8 year contract offer, and the threat of Free Agency are your leverage - so you lean into that - but keeping that negotiating power means you actually are open to negotiating to stay here.

Come on Johnny you don’t want NJ, that’s silliness. You grow up a Flyers fan so I get that but the Devils are to you the way the Oilers are to me, should be out of the question.
It’s the Flames you want. Flyers don’t have a hope at a cup anytime soon and haven’t figured out that goaltending is a position that exists in decades.
