If (a) he's a difficult signing, or just wants just his QO leading to the same thing next year, or just a short term to go to UFA within a couple years and (b) if the assets you get keep the team moving forward.
Tkachuk is a PPG guy off of Gaudreau's line. He might replicate 100 points with, say, McDavid or Matthews, but not with Kyrou or Thomas in St. Louis. He's going to want Gaudreau money or close to it, and he's that's a tough ask for a cap struggling team who still has to sign Mangiapane and Kylington, plsu fill the roster.

While I would guess you are correct, the Flames problem is they dont have enough top end talent.
I fail to believe with our current makeup and lack of any top end prospects knocking at the door we can get better and contend for a cup by trading our 2nd or 3rd best player.
We have too much money tied up in average players is our problem, not needing to pay our top players.
(Not saying I have a good way to fix it - I just don't see how this team can get better by trading MT. And if you can't get better for next season why not burn it down in some fashion)

I mean, it would be ballsy for a 20 year old account to just come out and troll us.

Gaudreau had 115 points this season.
115
McDavid has 2 seasons with more points in his career, 123 and 116. McDavid signed his 12.5 M AAV contract before his 116 point season.
Auston Matthews signed a 5 year 11.6 million AAV contract, he was barely a point a game player upon signing and he topped out last year at 106
Gaudreau is a bonafide superstar and the Flames are lost without him. Time to pay him, if the counter is 11 million you take it.

By not knowing, we get to read what's happening. If the source is named then they'll fall out of favor and we won't know anything in the future.

All correct facts. But TBF no GM looks at a year in isolation. JG's 3 year average is lower than McDavid or Matthews. Plus he's a winger which is another factor.
If he doesn't budge from 11, fine. But why not counter if it means you can keep Mangiapane for example.

8 x 11m is 88
on a 7 year contract means a 12.5 offer to make the same money.
Not sure there are a lot of teams out there willing to make that kind of offer - or have the cap space to do it

I'm not opposed to countering, but 500k on Gaudreau's contract one way or another is not the difference between keeping Mangiapane and trading him.
That's the kind of money you pinch down the roster to make up the difference.

Gaudreau has 3 seasons of being PPG or better, not counting his 115 point season
Matthews got 11.6 barely being a PPGer. Gaudreau has proven himself to be better then Matthews for one.
And again, Gaudreau is a week away from being a UFA. THere is no hometeam discount or a great deal to be had here. Either the Flames pay, or Gaudreau walk and the Flames rebuild.
Squabbling over 500K a year could break the franchise for the next decade. You don't do it.

No, no he isn't. Love Johnny but I take Matthews and so does every GM.

This isn't a Matthews or Gaudreau situation.
It's a Gaudreau or no Gaudreau situation.
Flames will never get a player like Gaudreau again unless they draft him. Do you want to wait another 5-10 years?

Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames
Gaudreau was tied for second in the NHL this season with 115 points (40 goals, 75 assists) in 82 regular-season games. He led the NHL with a plus-64 rating and set NHL career highs in goals, assists, points, game-winning goals (nine) and shots on goal (262). The 28-year-old forward led the Flames in the playoffs with 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 12 games. Gaudreau has 609 points (210 goals, 399 assists) in 602 regular-season games and 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 42 playoff games.
This is a player who can command $11M. As a team, we have to pay or go through an uglier rebuild. We can make room if Photon is correct about Lucic and Monahan can be on LTIR.

It might be the difference between happy Mangiapane and arbitration Mangiapane. Or keeping Kylington. Or signing a decent bottom pair D. The Flames are in a situation where they have to really penny pinch. They have two forward lines and a bottom pairing to sign just to form a basic roster, and then they need some aces as well.
Currently they have just under 27M in space. 11 gone and it's 26. 9 for Tkachuk just on QO and it's 17. 6 for Mangiapane and it's 11. Then you need to replace/re-sign Zadorov, Gudbranson, Stone, Jarnkrok, Lewis, Ritchie, Ruzicka. Treliving has to see if he can save any money, wherever he can.

I'd take Matthews over Johnny, but I'd take Johnny over Marner, and Marner got what, $10.5M? And on his RFA contract and being a native Torontonian. Now granted, Dubas sucks, but still. I'd pay Johnny Marner's contract anyday.
