I'm surprised Treliving is willing to go through this again next offseason. His stubbornness may be his undoing if he loses both players for nothing. IMO a fireable offense on it's own.

Who says he will go through it this off season? Flames can trade Tkachuk at anytime . It doesn’t need to be at the draft.

"Zero plans of trading" just means they're not expected to be shopping him though. If someone comes forward with an offer worth listening to then peoples' minds could change in a hurry.
My guess remains he signs his QO and is traded next deadline as a rental. Unfortunately we'd get more for him now, but history of shortsightedness has me pessimistic about anything happening to optimize a return

Just like they could have traded Gaudreau at any time this past season?
The team is trying to win, it's pretty clear with this news. If they are trying to win, they won't be trading him.

If Gaudreau ends up moving, they might pull the trigger on Tkachuk though. Especially if he isn’t interested in signing a long term contract.

I mean, it's 6 days before unrestricted free agency and we still don't know if Gaudreau is interested in signing a long term contract.
Who is to say Tkachuk is any different?
There's a reason why teams seldom put themselves in these scenarios.

I dont think its that, I think its just the "process" which they've followed all season long. Doesn't really tell us much in terms of plan, it tells us that they've made offers (we already know that) and that both players haven't committed/commented yet (we already knew that too)
At some point Brad and the Flames need to "pivot" as he says and put the teams best interest in mind if both players are refusing to comment/answer on their offers.
Tonight is a BIG pivot point, if they go past that its definitely a bad situation.
To me this just further emphasizes the notion that Johnny is likely gone and that Matthew is waiting to see what Johnny does before he makes his move.
Oof.

Doesn't say that to me. If you're Johnny, the only reason you stay silent is to put the pressure on Treliving to up the deal.
Informing Treliving you want to say hurts your negotiating position.
Informing Treliving you want to go potential gets you to a team you want to go to faster, with the possibility of an 8 year deal still on the table (in a sign and trade). Otherwise, you get to go to UFA anyway.
Johnny staying silent is the only scenario that hurts both Johnny and Treliving in a scenario where he's intending to leave anyway.

Very good point. He’s either undecided, or putting pressure for highest deal possible.
Him staying silent but with intentions to leave hurts both his legacy as well as the future of the Flames and his ex teammates by handcuffing them in indecisiveness.

Also potentially hurts himself because he could arguably be freed up to talk to other teams if he declared now. Plus other teams might make moves in the interim which would impair their ability to sign him.

Exciting until next season, if we have to watch the Flames without Johnny and Matthew

Both New Jersey and Ottawa look to want to move on and end their rebuild.
New Jersey definitely has stronger foundation players though.

Close enough in negotiations, that it looks like forsberg won’t be hitting the free agency market next week.
A possible Gaudreau replacement. If Johnny walks, maybe we should use the cap space to recoup some assets by acquiring a short term over priced player with a sweetener.

Yup. To me it sounded like a gm that knows that both his stars are leaving. If true let's hope he gets something back for Chucky that will ease the pain a bit.

I hope BT is considering a deal for next years’ picks. Seems unless someone blow us away with a top three or so, dealing Tkachuk for next years picks is more worthwhile. I can only hope.
