I absolutely buy the notion that Johnny's decision determines what the flames do with Tkachuk. If Johnny does or has advised them that he's considering elsewhere I think the Flames move Tkachuk for a haul.

That's what they were expanding on a little on the 960 this morning. If Johnny does walk then I think the Flames explore a Tkachuk trade, and NJ could make it happen.

Something like Holtz and the 2nd O/A would be the starting point.

That would most certainly put the Flames into a rebuild though, and I'm not sure where the organization stands on that. You could try a re-tool but that would handcuff the flames into signing nasty UFA contracts we'll not want 2-3 years from now.

So I think the play is sign BOTH or sign neither.
Hope its both, but its starting to sound like its leaning towards neither.

If its neither, I pray they do it the "right" way.
Yes timing plays a lot into it, and of course luck when drafting top 3 but if you're going to lose 2 of your top 3 forwards you most certainly have to do it properly.
You have to go into next year with multiple picks (1st rounds) and hope you land in the top 3.

It would be nice to know either way today.

If Gaudreau doesn't want to stay, that's fine. Move some assets for the rights of Filip Forsberg.

Trade Tkachuk for a massive package.

Trade Lucic for a pick.

Unless Tkachuk is signed immediately by his acquiring team, I don't see how you get anything close to the 2nd overall pick for him.

This sounds like a very bad idea. I suspect things will remain quiet today and through the weekend, and Gaudreau will walk this right up to the 13th. I don't see that a decision today would affect much of what the Flames do at the draft.

Would have to come with an extension for sure no doubt. But if NJD go after Johnny and float the idea of Tkachuk coming too that sweetens the deal for both guys and SURELY gets you the 2nd OA pick or the Flames don't consider it.

Unless they have already been working towards that.

You weren't paying attention then. It didn't take Nostradamus to predict this outcome. It was as obvious as the nose on Tim Hunter's face. Gaudreau has been saying all the nice things about Calgary possible, but he's been pining to get closer to home his whole career. Tkachuk? Similar type thing. Americans want to live in America. You have to look at that aspect of who they are and manage that aspect of their time with your team accordingly. You can bring players like this in, you just have to understand the shelf life and manage it appropriately. Gaudreau should have been traded last off-season before his limited NTC kicked in. Tkachuk needs to be moved at the draft so someone can negotiate beyond the qualifying offer, because it appears Tkachuk is signing that qualifier with Calgary and is gone next summer. This has been talked about for two years. Treliving screwed the pooch by not understanding this dynamic.

The Flames don't have a pretty good prospect pool. Do the Flames even have a bonified blue chip prospect? Wolf is probably the best of the bunch, but he's an undersized goaltender in game where blocking the puck has more value than stopping the puck. Still a long road to go there. Beyond that we don't have a forward that looks capable of playing in the top six and we don't have a defensive prospect that looks like a lock to play in the top four. We have a number of players that could pay support roles in the NHL, but we don't have anything that could step in and replace Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Tanev, or Markstrom in any shape or form.

Saying this I'm still hopeful johnny and Matthew are both signed long term
We all are, but that likelihood seems to be fading quickly.

Forsberg looks like Gaudreau, in wanting to at least dip his toe into the UFA waters...

Timing is the key for the Flames here; if Johnny does move to UFA, I think other players would let him set the market, which will start the movement.

No point in trading assets though; if Johnny moves on, the Flames will direct some of that cash to someone like Forsberg.

I'm not sure I agree with this.

The Flames have to submit their qualifying offer to Tkachuk by July 11. I don't think the Flames should do that because there is a very good chance he accepts the one year deal and it takes him straight to UFA.

IMO signing Tkachuk to his qualifying offer is the 2nd worst case scenario here - the worst case being they offer him no qualifying offer and he becomes a UFA. Obviously signing him to 1 year is better than nothing.

But the Flames need to know what they are doing with Tkachuk before July 11, which is before free agency opens on the 13th. Either sign him to a multi-year contract or trade him by July 11. Don't lose leverage again.

I agree with you, but you also have to send him a qualifying offer if you don't accomplish either of your top two options or you just lose him as a UFA now.

If you are going to move Tkachuk you may as well up your offer to Gaudreau and swing for the fences. Losing both would be devastating.

Agreed and understood, I just think the Flames need to avoid that scenario and it sounds unlikely that they will.

I suppose Tkachuk may not accept his QO and may try to get more on a one year deal for next season, but it still passes all the leverage to him.

If Gaudreau and Tkachuk are leaving, just rebuild correctly. Signing Forsberg is only going to have them hovering around the middle. Doubt Forsberg would want to come here anyway with no Gaudreau or Tkachuk. If those guys are leaving, I really hope they rebuild properly and patiently. No re-tool BS that just puts them back to mediocrity.

Whether Tkachuk signs his QO or not doesn't really matter in terms of a trade. His acquiring team would still have to qualify him at the same number. He is still just as movable a week from now as he is today.

If Tkachuk accepts his QO, he cannot be extended until January 1. It creates uncertainty for the acquiring team and I think it absolutely reduces his value.
