Trade him or sign him by Monday.

If his intention is to sign the QO and then go UFA, they have all summer to trade him if they want.
I think your July 11 deadline is not relevant. Just rushing to make a bad trade.

He’s a rental at that stage.
The best case scenario (in the case of a trade) is that we trade him somewhere he’s willing sign long-term with.

He already is a rental for all intents and purposes if he doesn't sign a long term extension.

That’s the best case scenario no matter what, though?
Either we sign him because we want to sign him and he wants to sign here, or one of those things aren’t true and we trade him to a team that wants to take that risk or one that knows he’ll sign long term.
We’re not signing him to 8 years with the intention of keeping him and then trading him.
Whatever hang ups around that already exist. The QO is meaningless, and there is no near term deadline that changes anything.

If we lose Gaudreau and can't sign Tkachuk, then we have to trade Tkachuk for 2 top 6 forwards. Hopefully, Brad could nail that trade.

I found the Chucky bit more interesting tbh, especially since he's a Blues writer and we've discussed them as a possible trade partner over the last few pages. Who knows.

Yeah them offering Gaudreau $9.5M doesn't seem like a big surprise at this point.
I think if Gaudreau indicates he wants to stay they would be willing to go up to $10 - we've heard that money isn't going to be an issue here.
The Tkachuk bit is far more intriguing - I have a feeling that he's being shopped right now and could get moved before the draft tomorrow night. Part of me thinks they don't want to pay both of them $10M plus and they are more anchored to Gaudreau being the offensive driver there.

I doubt Tkachuk signs the QO immediately, as it closes the door on him signing a long-term deal (though obviously you'd like to avoid that risk if possible). On July 12 he will be free to talk to any team he'd like - ostensibly about an offer sheet, but they could also be discussing possibilities 1 year down the road.
I don't think there is a significant difference in his trade value at 1x9M vs. unsigned QO (where 1x9M is the worst case scenario for any team acquiring him). Even if it's not a great AAV, I think he'll be a lot more valuable with cost/term-certainty.
A 1-year offer-sheet is a potentially brutal scenario though. If the Flames match, they cannot trade him for 1 calendar year, walking him to UFA. I don't believe that is true for the other team if the sheet goes unmatched (so they have an out if Tkachuk won't sign an extension between Jan. 1 and TDL).
An interesting wrinkle is that he might not be eligible to sign an 8 year extension until after the next TDL passes.

Plus the age factor I still think Tkachuk has a leg to stand on to get more than $10 mil after the season he had and with his UFA status coming so soon. I wouldn’t be surprised he’s asking $10 or $10.5 on a 3 year deal. That’s why he might be on the move and if we can land 2nd overall just get it done now it’s a no brainer

I think Tkachuk is never going to sign long term. He may sign short term big money deals and keep the Flames on that line for a few years, then ultimately bolt. I'm happy moving him for assets plus good (if not as good) players and and using more cap space for Johnny. Of the two, I feel like Johnny is the more valuable, the harder to replace in the scheme of things and more team committed. I'm not sure I would have said so last year but I do now. I guess the question is as the lesser of two evils who would a guy like, say Mangiapane, or a Patrick Laine, or Burakovsky, or Trochek more easily replace on the top line, knowing that it's a downgrade in aby event.
I'm betting if it's coming down to a choice between the two, Treliving is also asking Sutter what he prefers.

The draft and free agency are great times of the year. I always find it fun to watch how it all shakes out. It is even more fun as the Flames have a lot going on at the moment.
Last year was frustrating as the team looked like it really needed a shake up, but it seemed like trades were very hard to complete as everything was waiting for Eichel.
With speculation about Johnny and Matthew I will be excited to what happens (or doesn't happen) tomorrow.
