Do I have to see something to not be surprised by it?

Neutral observers all.

Just kind of jarring to really hear others say it even if its been covered ad nauseum here.
If things go as south as ppl like Johnson think it will, Flames owners will have no choice but to strip mine the management office.
None at all. No GM team can survive losing your two biggest stars for nothing.

Thats too high a price for 2 2nd round exits and 2 pacific division penants in what 6 years? Yeah, that won't fly.

Like I said yesterday, if Treliving was a wizard, he'd be Gandalf the grey. He's going to need to be Gandalf the white this offseason.

I suspect that Treliving's performance evaluations are a little more nuanced than just that. I believe he will more likely get another extension than be fired, even if both Gaudreau and Tkachuk are not extended. Ownership loves him, and they trust him.

Every media guy is going to say he is leaving because it gets attention and hits, that is what they get paid for. That's the drama people want to hear and read, not that he is staying in Calgary. Every supposed insider is going to run with that even though we know neither side is leaking anything.

I'm still a little surprised at this "sizeable" offer of 8 x $9.5M coupled now with the rumor from Friedman that the Flames would love to hear something from his camp this week and are now "flexible" to increase the offer.

I realize signing all other players is a major challenge, but that's not really Gaudreau's problem, and if you're "moving heaven and earth", how is that your first offer? Low-balling the annual amount and transparently using the 8th year to negotiate a potentially slightly higher total 8 year contract amount to win over the player I don't believe is the best starting strategy.

I would imagine they're aware other teams are prepared to offer $10+ over 7 years and there's something to being valued as a top-player in the league for what you're doing now. Also aware everyone keeps on saying it's not about money, but after scoring the second highest amount of points with a truly legendary +/- and driving the "best line in hockey", he should be paid as a top earner annually. Even if the team has tough decisions when signing other players - it's the double-edged sword of having a top-five scorer.

And while the 8 year offer from the Flames is a lot of dough for sure, he's still making less per year than Panarin - that's not right. If I value myself as a top earner (and Gaudreau was theoretically #2 earner in the league this year), I want to be paid commensurately and fairly by the market. And ownerships typically need to step up accordingly.

All said, if I'm John (or his agent) I would have decided to set a min benchmark at $10M - with every job offer you need to know your min number. Having heard this first offer, I keep mum, and I wait until the 11th hour to see if the Flames up it to $9.75 or $10M, as I ultimately use it to boost my 8 year AAV amount from $9.5 to ~$10M.

I know many may disagree, but even at $10M/yr Johnny could be a bargain relative to other top offensive players over the next few years. What does Pasta, JT Miller or Kadri get, for example? Pay the man his money, as that guy says.

If he tests FA just to sign here, that would be pretty cool too.

All the media hype shows would be wall to wall JG and then he signs in boring old Calgary. Haha, that would be great.

It would be cool of I'd didn't cost more on the aav. If the Flames have to compete 7 year deal on 7 year deal that's gonna hurt

Why not allow Gaudreau camp to talk to other teams early like Philly and NJ? Then if Johnny decides that he wants to be closer to the East, then the Flames can start doing trades on Nhl draft day.
Flames can still use their advantage of 8 year contract.
Thoughts?

Sign him to 8 years, while having a trade already worked out?
I don't think the league would like that, we ain't Vegas.

Because the only leverage the Flames have is the 8th year and that makes for a tiny bit of leverage

I think it’s a forgone conclusion that Johnny is getting at least $10M per season.

He might even get in the $12M range.

I don’t think that’s it, players basically get one chance to chose where they play, this is JG chance. It’s pretty logical that most players would want to see what options are available.
You seem to confusing people thinking he won’t sign with people hoping he won’t sign. It’s just as likely he signs as it is he walks. I’m not hoping he walks but I’m able to acknowledge that it is a very real possibility

End of the day if the reports are true and the Flames did offer Johnny a salary that couldn't be matched but he puts his family over money. I'll respect that and cheer even harder for him to win a cup.

Not many players put Family over $$

Honestly, at this point, suggesting he won't sign isn't exactly going out on a limb. One week to go and every minute that goes by makes it less likely it gets done in time. That's just the way time works. There is also some truth to the notion that if he was sure he wanted to sign, it would have been done by now. The best situation is that he is unsure and the worst case is that he is sure he doesn't want to. The possibility of a negative out come given the lack of any other information, outweighs the chance of a positive outcome. It's simple math... it's a 50/50 chance or a 0/100 chance that he signs at this point. The 100% chance is not a realistic hope given that it is down to the wire now.

If a media guy wanted attention, the more outrageous stance would be saying that he is likely to sign. I still hope it happens obviously, but we should prepare for the worst.

I agree his evaluation will be more nuanced than that.

It’s tough though. On the one hand I love that Treliving “went for it”, who knows, maybe it might’ve worked and we coulda been in the Final or with a Cup.

On the other hand, it’s easy to see why so many, including ownership, will view this as a gigantic cluster####. The Flames are in a very tough spot. Maybe the toughest I can recall actually as a fan. Can’t imagine the owners like it.
