Kane and Dubois don’t make sense in the context of the discussion though. They also talk about drafting and developing a player who becomes a star and then leaves town. Neither of those players fit the description. Kane in particular, isn’t really a fixture on the Oilers and I think everyone expected him to be one and done.

No matter how much money he's made, if I was in his spot and I had a chance of helping my sister or brother even further, I'd still be chasing the money assuming the money choice is more or less as good as the Flames situation. If it were Detroit or some place where it isn't safe in the traditional sense, I wouldn't be too keen on it but if it's say Boston or something, I'd take the money. I wouldn't blame him at all. It's not about family or whatever, it's a guy doing what he deems best at an early point in his life. He can always take lesser money later in his life when he's older, but a full $10M on the table is a lot to leave. Leaving $1M is admirable but anything more is pretty crazy.

And it’s probably not 10M at the end either. The biggest chunk is going to come in the first 5 years (I bet half of that extra 10 comes in the first 2 or 3 years).

But think of how hilarious it would be if Winnipeg and E. Kane somehow ended back together. I am now hoping this happens.

The offer has to go to 10.5x8 before they lose all leverage. He gets to July 13 and he’s gonzo.

Boston is a sneaky, sneaky destination. They just hired Johnny’s coach from the USHL where he played before he was drafted and he played college there.
If they did something crazy like trade Pasternak for the 2nd overall pick then sign Johnny that could really work out for them. Unlike Philly or New Jersey they have a much better track record of winning and being highly competitive.

I see him considering the Bruins too. Agree Calgary needs to get to 10.5 and if they did then sure, I give them credit for trying but if they're not there yet, then I personally don't believe they've "done everything they could" because I personally think he's worth it based on the market and what he's done and will do.

Can't imagine anyone would be trading for Kane's UFA rights before his arbitration is settled with the Sharks, technically he might still end up under contract.

Boston is on track to be a lottery team for a long time. Their best players are at the end, if Gaudreau has any drive to win a Cup he won't sign in Boston. Also, the Bruins have plenty of depth on LW, they need centre help. I don't see a fit.

Don’t mean to be a Debbie downer but I think he is gone. If he takes the 8th year off the table by going to FA, it ain’t about money. And the offer has been out there for days.

I think too much stock is put into the “if he wants to win” analysis. If your heart is back home, not hard to convince yourself a team can build a winner in the next three years. If he wanted to be here he would have already signed.

Or he thinks he can get more money out of Calgary by waiting and putting the pressure on. That’s his agent’s MO. See Nylander and Krug (in 2014). Krug would also have stayed in Boston had they offered a big contract but they just couldn’t.
And his agent has a stake in it.

Dubois makes perfect sense. Listen closely and Dregar says "speculation in Winnipeg" then a few seconds later he says "I already hinted at it" when pressed by Ferarro.... thats literally the only thing thats come out of Dregar's mouth at that point. There is nothing else in the spoken context of this discussion he could be referring to besides Speculation in Winnipeg when he says "I already hinted at it" unless theres some previous part of the show talking the Flames we missed.
Then Dreger says the "issue is trading a players rights because the team knows that their not going to be able to sign this player" still could be PLD. He's told them he is not signing long term. Then Ferarro, NOT Dreger, Ferraro who presumably doesnt know any of the actual details that Dregar knows... We know this because he was asking what Dregar knew in the first place from his contacts... says " I would assume its deflating to a team that you've got a Free Agent coming up that you cant sign, developing a star bla bla.. hes spitballing on Dregar's talking points.
Ferraro doesnt know the details you can tell by how he phrased that by saying " I would assume" not "I know", Ferraro isnt privy to that knowledge... Id say it doesnt fit if it was Dreger that actually said that not his studio buddy thats obligated to have some sort of talking point to add to the discussion. Theres nothing there that doesnt point to PLD imo . The Jets even had talks with the Ranger 3 days ago about trading his rights its been rumored there's a thread on HF. I know we want info but i'm pretty sure this isnt about Johnny. Or at least thats my take.

I totally agree, which is why I am highly sceptical that he is as analytical as some here have speculated regarding roster construction.

But I sure don't agree here. On the contrary, if Gaudreau didn't want to be here, then I am pretty sure we would have known by now. I think the reason it is as quiet as it is is precisely because this is such a difficult decision for him.

Fair point. But if he makes it to FA and we lose the 8th year advantage, we pay what? 11? I don’t think money is the sticking point here. Which is why I am very nervous. It will be a real pill if he ends up doing a deal for less total value than the 8x9.5.

I will rephrase: if he really wants to stay here it will get done before the 12th. Brad has to take it up to 10.5x8 if he’s all in.

I don’t think that would make a lot of sense. He still has two more years until UFA
