If you run a company and have trouble filling positions you need to pay people more / offer more compensation.
This isn't hard.
Companies have jacked up the #### out of their prices due to "inflation" and "supply chain constraints" yet can't figure out just why oh why people still aren't flocking to work for me?
Pay your people more money, nitwits. Starting with you, Air Canada, who have nothing to worry about because the feds will always bail you out anyway. So dumb.
Also, inflation is also partially driven by greed, so you get no sympathy if you can't wrap it around your heads that you need to pay people more.
Companies that don't pay competitive wages GMG, should NOT be looked at as good ESG custodians and people should make purchasing and investment decisions for these companies with every bit the same weight of how they treat shareholders as to how they treat employees. Pay your people. Personally I view companies that don't pay their people well as borderline deadbeats.

It's even more ridiculous when you look at some of the profits these guys are pulling in and the CEO/executive salaries they're paying out. They're just full-blown hogs at this point.

Any boogy man excuse for liberals to stay in power forever…lol
It’s coming to an end soon boys embrace it.
Close the Mac book at home, return to work and carry life as normal.
CBC will be just fine in their own. (On not)
It is this type of attitude that is causing me to be a homeless as it relates to a political party.
The CPC should be asking itself the hard questions of why they can't put forward a candidate that can beat Trudeau or whoever runs for the Liberal party. Instead of putting itself in the center to attract right leaning Liberals they have veered further and further to the right. It is like they don't want to be elected.
A little intellectual honesty would go a long way in the CPC right now, or it should go a long way.....

Unless the idea is that eventually the Liberals will cross a line and people will want them out. At that point - it will be between the NDP and CPC and I think we all know who will win that. Still will be tough sledding to get a majority for this CPC in even a Liberal wipe out unless the BQ also implodes at the same time as most of the cities will just move to NDP.

If only there was a way to help the employees of these “borderline deadbeat” employers without having them deterred by the fear that they will lose their jobs for holding their employer accountable.
While I believe compensation can be improved upon, in the case of air Canada I don’t think that is their biggest barrier to hiring. A lot of people are skeptical to start a new career in the airline industry right now because they’re worried it could be shut down again. Similar to how despite the high price of oil a lot of people in Alberta who previously worked in O&G aren’t heading back to the patch.
The problem is big business knows if they yell and complain the government will allow for more low wage immigrants to fill the void, and big business can continue raking in the profits.
At the same time I think people aren't being fair if they think everything is coming down to wages. I know quite a few companies hiring right now who would pay way above market value and they can't even get job interviews.
We are paying the price of decades long stupidity of driving our kids away from trade schools and skilled labor.

Maybe AC just needs a stronger and better union if they are struggling to hire people. Unions solve all the issues.

Maybe. Or maybe you’re oversimplifying a more complex issue. To my knowledge AC didn’t have staffing issues before the pandemic so if you have some specifics as to what their Union is doing differently now please feel free to share that. I highly doubt their Union is a barrier if the company is wanting to pay higher wages.
Unions don’t solve all workplace issues, but they’ve proven to be very effective at solving a lot of them.

That's definitely the prevailing idea, the problem being that they keep abandoning more of the centre position every day to try and lock it in, thereby extending the metaphorical line the liberals would have to cross into infinity.

You're right, it's a combo of wages + working environment. Something that yes, more Unions would help with.
Take AC as an example: it's not only that they're chronically underpaying people, it's that the conditions of working for AC are also abhorrently nightmarish and basically preclude you for living among the normal population. People used to have a romanticism about the industry- that was murdered when they were hung to dry for a couple years. Now no one is left to be brutally mistreated.
Seriously, who is jumping up and down to work for ~45k a year on crazy shift work with frequent cancellations and uncertain hours, crazy unpaid layovers, stretch time, etc. And frankly this is the tip of this iceberg. This is starting to hit nursing too and it is going to be way worse there.

I will say this though...Airline Workers, similar to your example regarding Nurses and Teachers and other jobs out there, some people feel like its a calling.
That job you described? I'd never do that in a million years, I cant even imagine what kind of compensation would get me to do that.
But some people love it. They get other perks sometimes, love to travel, like those layovers, etc.
I have several clients who are Flight Attendants and each and every one of them would tell you that they do it because they really enjoy it and they like the perks.

100%. Same with the nurses i know. But, the pandemic culled the herd there. Many flight attendants I know through my life have second jobs, and almost all of them are just happily continuing with those careers now. Dreams die. These industries are fueled on dreams.

The favourite one being 'lying to their customers'. "Yes, sir, the flight is landing late, but your connecting flight has been re-booked on the next one. Gate agents are waiting to help you." LOFL it has.

This is the same thing as complaining about a McDonald's worker who tells you the ice cream machine is broken. That's what they're told to say and they have no choice but to repeat that line, and absolutely no control over the result to you.

Thats really the heart of the matter.
Most people just enjoy stability, so back when these people were working as Flight Attendants or whatever, they were just keeping on doing what they're doing.
Then COVID happened forcing people into living differently, and similar to people collecting CERB or wanting to work more from home or whatever the case may be, they've been doing that for 2+ years, they appear to like it and want to continue doing it.
Do they now want to interrupt all of that to go back to being Flight Attendants? Probably not.
Its going to take a new crop of dreamers to fill these positions. So its not all about money or perks, you need people with the right temperament and mindset to fill these gaps. People who want to do it. Not just people who want a job.
A great example that I give people is Truck Drivers.
I can drive a Truck. I could go out and get a license and voila!
But in no way do I have the mentality, temperament or desire to be a Truck Driver. Its just not a job that I personally would be a good fit for. Just because I can drive a Truck does not make me a 'Truck Driver' regardless of the compensation.
Same with being a Flight Attendant.

The growth of far right and the push to violence is a concern in this country. The level of vitriol these guys have is just absurd. If you take a breath and actually think about things - we've got it about as well as anyone in the history of the world in this country. But they allow themselves to get so wound up - its scary.
I agree. Do you think it is worse than it used to be because of social media / internet? People having easier access to latch on to far reaching ideas?
As people have said before, there are mental health issues with lots of people who still no into far right / far left extremes.
How do we help these people? I am sure most don’t want help, but still, how can we as a society help this growing group?

Nevermind the 1% restriction in wage increases, add in inflation, and you have nursing employees who are literally loosing 6% in wages per year.
