I don't think Calgary will be his best option to win, I think it will be one of some similar options to win, with some options being really close to home.

Remember the comparison right now on Johnny's side in terms of chances to win isn't 'last year's Flames vs where other teams are at currently' it's

Last year's Flames minus Gaudreau vs others teams minus Gaudreau. He's the superstar that gets plugged into the equation of any team he joins including the Flames now. So you can't simply say "The Flames were a really good playoff team with Gaudreau so why would he go to a team that wasn't as good as the Flames?".

He'll be having that same effect on the team he joins that was a huge reason why the Flames were as successful as they were this season.

How much of the bonus was paid by the Oilers?

Is it a nice little $6M 7 beds / 8 baths place out in Stonepine?

That is the best news so far this off season.

There was some info in this thread that was very specific that was since removed. IMO it had the total ring of truth and it was 8*9.5. I choose to believe it.

That is a fine starting point but this doesn’t look to be a negotiation. Gaudreau is about a week away from listening to formal offers from any team in the league so if Flames haven’t made him their best offer yet, I hope they have a plan to do so rather soon.

As you point out, we don’t know for sure what has been offered. But the 9.5 is out there from a few sources and nothing different has been reported yet. Seems like a reasonable thing to debate in the absence of any other information.

If Lucic has been moved (Thanks Milan) and Monahan is on IR for a good part of the next season, we will have the cap space to make things work.

It's also possible that the CP poster and Friedman have the same source who gave the 9.5M number.

It could be totally wrong for sure. The CP poster had some other specific info too. The bigger question isn’t the initial offer really but what has happened since. Any negotiation? If not, hope Flames are confident with what they put in front of him.

Obviously you have to deal Lucic if you can, but that's a big room leadership hole and not to mention a nuclear deterrent on the ice that leaves. Which I don't think we will fully realize until he's gone.

It's really too bad Lucic's AAV is so high, if he was $2 million AAV or less he's a guy you want to keep around.

He had surgery nearly 4 months ago, he's likely back for training camp.

It's also possible the $9.5M number comes from doing some pretty basic math. You're not maying Gaudreau the same year-to-year non the contract, and having a start and end number with a gradual and consistent drop in salary makes that $9.5M number reasonable over eight seasons.

The Flames probably start the season with Tanev on the LTIR.

That's good for cap purposes, but it's not good if you want to win hockey games.

Friedman isn’t claiming any info. His is a complete guess at what he thinks an offer might look like. If Friedman has something more solid he says he “is hearing…”

I do know the post you are talking about. But that was literally weeks ago. Even if that was legit info it’s out of date. And it’s even possible it was taken down not because the source was upset the truth got out but maybe because it was incorrect info being bandied about.

Man, if Looch is moving on I'm kinda bummed. But, his cap hit is needed elsewhere. IDC what anyone else says, he turned into a massive addition to the leadership when it was needed the most. And as it stands, going to be tough to replace.

Best of luck Looch. Thanks for being waaaaay better than you Edmonton stint while you were in CGY.

I don't think the specific number matters at this point. Johnny likely knows the team is prepared to make an 8 year commitment at a hefty price to bring him back. It comes down to - does he want to be here or not. If he does - they will find a number that works. If he doesn't the number doesn't matter.

At this stage it's about Johnny making a life decision. The number will work out if he chooses to be here.

Yeah I've grown to really love Looch in Calgary. Sure his goal scoring dried up and really the game has passed him but man did he ever put in a full compete effort every single game.

Whoever gets him only has to pay him 1million because of the bonus pay out already. Cap hit is six million but that's an easy contract to move and glad Treliving found a mover if true

How do you figure? There isn't a team he can go to near home that has as good of linemates or the depth the Flames have. You think Gaudreau is going to fix the Flyers? No chance in hell, that team has so many holes and issues it isn't funny not to mention the cap situation and the fact they brought in a coach that alienates skill players. NJ? They need defence, goaltending, and size, they are not going to go after Gaudreau. The Islanders are trending down and cap strapped, the Rangers are trending up but don't have the cap with young players needing new contracts soon, the Penguins and Bruins are at the end of their contention windows, the Capitals need to spend on a C and goaltending. There is no situation out East that positions him better than Calgary that will be available to him.
