I suppose I should have been clearer. I'm well aware that the minimum length of any contract he's likely to sign will be seven years.
My point is that he's worth $12m a year over the next three or four years. His production is very likely to fall off a cliff once he hits 33, as it does for almost every other player. Giving him an eight year deal for eighty plus million dollars is likely the only way he stays in Calgary. Do we really want have a ten million dollar cap hit for a 36 year old player?
Yeah. Personally I feel the Flames wanted to get this done as quickly as possible so I don’t see the point of starting off with a low offer. At this point they have to have a good gauge on market value which is $10 million/season.
Honest question do you think that $9.5 x 8 is a stink bid or otherwise offensive?
If the market truly is $10M, it's incumbent on the Flames to get Johnny for the least amount of AAV as possible so they have the cap room to spend on other pieces.

And if the market is 10 (I think it’s higher) 9.5x8 is 6m more total $$

Production of elite players doesn't follow the same trajectory, many produce very well still at 35+.

While you may end up correct, but if you let all your best players go, you may never contend.
Be prepared to have the back end of these contracts stink, but you’ll likely be rebuilding anyway.
I'm just waiting for some clown to make a "Johnny has signed!" thread and then you open it and it says... "one of my hockey cards while I was in line at the bank/orange julius."

I'd agree that Johnny seems to be the sort of guy who would actually take a bit less if that means the money goes to bringing someone impactful in. This aligns with the earlier rumours about Johnny wanting someone else as an option that can carry the puck - add someone impactful and I'll take a mill less to help with that. If his rumoured market value is indeed 10.5ish, the 9.5 initial offer sounds right in this scenario.
Also agree that Johnny is a solid dude and will inform the Flames early if he's moving on. My guess is he's already decided he's going to re-sign with the Flames for the minimum amount of 9.5 per. He's agreed with his agent on a date when they'll inform the Flames of this decision, but his agent has convinced Johnny to be patient because he has nothing to lose and the Flames might just come back and flip that 9. 5 to a 10 and shed cap another way to add that impact player.
If this were the case they would just ask for the 10 (or more to land at 10)
