I expect this week he will make a decision. I think there’s a lot of mutual respect and if he intends to go to the market they will inform the Flames well prior to the 13th. I just don’t see him holding them hostage until the last hour regardless of the direction he has chosen.

I still believe he is quite conflicted about where he really wants to be due to his loyalty to Calgary. I doubt this is a negotiating ploy by Johnny or his agent.

Quite possible. I wasn’t suggesting he was doing anything wrong. But the longer it goes, the more I think Calgary is in play, because he’d want to give them some room to adjust.

He won't hold the Flames hostage at all, he may have already told them.
Regardless, for days and weeks, the Flames have undoubtedly been working on contingency plans with any number of scenarios between him and or MT not being on the roster next year...working those same back channels to figure out who they may be able to get here, nevermind also working on the PR mitigation.

I'd agree that Johnny seems to be the sort of guy who would actually take a bit less if that means the money goes to bringing someone impactful in. This aligns with the earlier rumours about Johnny wanting someone else as an option that can carry the puck - add someone impactful and I'll take a mill less to help with that. If his rumoured market value is indeed 10.5ish, the 9.5 initial offer sounds right in this scenario.
Also agree that Johnny is a solid dude and will inform the Flames early if he's moving on. My guess is he's already decided he's going to re-sign with the Flames for the minimum amount of 9.5 per. He's agreed with his agent on a date when they'll inform the Flames of this decision, but his agent has convinced Johnny to be patient because he has nothing to lose and the Flames might just come back and flip that 9. 5 to a 10 and shed cap another way to add that impact player.

You should be thankful. You've been a jerk to people questioning him re-signing for two years now. You would have been binned long ago if everyone was as brittle as you.

There you go name calling again and personally attacking. Why do the rules not apply to this guy? I have not been "a jerk at all", I have debated why I think he will stay. I have started Flames discussions, agreed and disagreed, been a contributing part of the community. Your history is absolutely nothing but troll posts and insults, you contribute NOTHING here, just break rules and you somehow get away with it. How? How in the hell is this guy still on here? Why do the rules never apply to Nik? Can a mod answer that?

Scoring Winger

A few things I align with other posters. He hasn’t said he’d like to come back, however if he was moving on for sure, JG seems like a guy who would let them know that. He’s struggling with the decision and there has to be a deadline. There’s just under 2 weeks. I also think he’s a team player and a winner. These rumors or guesses of 9.5, IMO isn’t a low ball. Landeskog signed for 7.0, he’s also a winger and the Captain. Is JG worth 2.5 million more a season? Yeah points are much better. Landeskog is a beast, yet injured. A leader though. I don’t see JG having that tangible. Does it outweigh the points difference between the two? Prob not. I think 2.5 million more is significant over Landeskog. The 11-13M/season is asinine and the Flames will be middling and no where near cup contenders as they can’t fill out a roster deep enough to win with a winger making 11-13. Tre knows that and needs to cut bait if JG pushes them that high in salary. I think JG wants to win as much as anything and knows taking 9.5 is key to paying MT, OK and filling out the rest.
I think they come together at a reasonable price. JG wants to win, do it here with his teammates.

Might Johnny have set some terms in his discussions with the team that he will sign at a certain price point as long as the team makes some other signings first? Could it be he's willing to offer a sweet deal as long as the Flames ink Tkachuk long-term and sign someone to help with carrying the puck into the zone?
Johnny has always seemed like a guy who wants to prove himself through his play and his accomplishments on the ice, both team and individual, rather than through his bank balance. He's been called undersized his whole career and was only drafted in the 4th round, and he has spent probably his whole life facing and overcoming doubters. I think he must have a greater sense of intrinsic drive to leave his mark and his legacy than he does to just cash in. He probably cares about that more than most

I don't know if he will tie himself to Tkachuk that much and I have no idea how the Flames find another puck carrier without doing it internally, there is no money left. Isn't Kylington developing into exactly that?

I think next year when Monahan and Looch come off the books it's possible. I actually don't hate Lindy carrying the puck so a dman being the puck carrier does make sense.

Next year for sure. I actually really want the Flames to hang onto Monahan this year, it could take him the whole year to get back up to speed which means we might be able to extend him in the cheap. What a boon that would be if he regained the majority of his skillset in the future and we can lock him up for under $3/yr.

Resigning both is one thing but I'd consider BT a wizard if he could snag Forsberg to a decent 7 year deal. Nicushkin (so?) To. 6x6 deal or so.
Resign magipagne
And then trade MT for good assets including a cost controlled legit top 6 forward.

I'm all about deals but $3/year is a bit low, no? I mean minimum wage in Alberta is $15/hour.
On a serious not, Gaudreau is a worth well over the $9.5m per year people in this thread are throwing around. He's easily a $12m a year player, just not for the next eight years. We have to be careful, because the cap won't keep going up and up forever and we're going to have to pay this guy around $10m a year until he's what, three months shy of his 37th birthday?
Seems pretty obvious to me that he's decided to take his talents elsewhere. I hope I'm wrong but if I was going to leave, I'd do everything exactly the way he has. I just don't get why he would have played out the last year of his contract and risked a career ending injury if he wasn't intent on leaving. I don't know all the rules but when was he eligible to sign the eight year extension? If it was anytime before the start of the 2021-22 season, I'd say he is as good as gone.

Again - people are throwing 9.5 around on the basis of a complete guess by Friedman. But no one is giving Gaudreau 12. I don’t see how any winger is “easily” 12x7 or 8. Since it would be a first.

I agree. He's not worth $84m over 7 years. He's definitely worth $12m a year for the next three years. Our problems is going to be having to pay a guy in his mid-thirties around $10m a year after his production inevitably slows down.

He’s not getting a 3 year deal from anyone. I actually have zero doubt that in a 7 or 8 year deal his actual salary in the first 3 years will be well above 12M.
